INHERITED MEMORIES: Reimagining the Past Through Collage Workshop with Elizabeth Gourlay
June 26 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
$48.00 – $60.00
Join artist Elizabeth Gourlay of Imagined Collected & Made on Thursday June 26 at 6pm, for a meaningful collage workshop where you’ll learn collage techniques, explore storytelling through imagery, and let your imagination run wild.Â
Your ticket includes everything needed to create a ready-to-frame collage including an 11×14 mat board and frame, an assortment of new and vintage books and magazines as well as a variety of other papers and ephemera and all other supplies needed.
While it’s not required—as some have already attended workshops with Elizabeth and may prefer to work more abstractly—she is encouraging participants to email a vintage photo of a family member, or someone meaningful they either know or wish they had the opportunity to have known, to collage around.
Reimagining old photographs through collage puts a modern twist on them. These older photos, especially when silhouetted and printed in black and white, look beautiful when layered with the colorful textures of vintage magazines, books, wallpaper, and other ephemera that she’ll be providing and are a good starting focal point to build and layer around.
Here’s what we need from you:
-
- Please send a few photo options of someone you’d like to collage around to elizabethgourlay01@gmail.comÂ
- Photos can be in color or black and white. Elizabeth will take care of silhouetting, cropping, and converting them to black and white, if needed.
- If you’re using a non-digital image, just scan or snap a photo with your iPhone in natural daylight—avoid glare by removing it from the glass frame.
- If you don’t want to use a photo, no problem at all— just send Elizabeth an email with the words “no photo”.
- Deadline for photo submissions: ASAP, no later than June 24 please.
Limited to 12 attendees.Â

About Elizabeth Gourlay
Elizabeth has been making art for as long as she can remember, drawn to the process of collecting, creating, and storytelling. She studied Fine Arts and Decorative Art Restoration at FIT, then fell into a career as a photo stylist for clothing companies like J Crew, Madewell, Brooks Brothers, Lands End and Vineyard Vines to name a few. But it was during the pandemic that she dove back into her art-making, experimenting with photography, digital and analog collages, and projections. Collage combines so many things she is passionate about: the thrill of hunting for vintage books and magazines, the meditative act of cutting and arranging images, and the joy of sharing creativity with others. Family history and artifacts have always captivated her, and she’s had the good fortune to inherit several unique heirlooms—a favorite being an intricately decorated Easter egg created by her great-great-grandmother Esther from 1881. A deep connection to the past inspires her to create and to help others preserve and reimagine their own stories through collage.
