SUMMARY:Upstate Art Weekend featuring Natural Tendencies at Yellow Studio
DESCRIPTION:Yellow Studio is thrilled to be an official participant in Upstate Art Weekend. \nNatural Tendencies\, featuring work by Tomoko Abe\, Natale Adgnot\, Allison Belolan and Christy Sheppard Knell\, is an exploration of human inclinations and how they inform our interactions with nature. Through glass\, fabric\, projection\, ink\, beeswax\, thermoplastic\, horsehair and beyond\, these artists explore the relationship between humanity and nature\, the tension between transience and permanency and the ubiquity of bias\, both conscious and unconscious. Experimenting with unusual materials and allowing them to dictate what takes form serves as a reminder to distinguish between what is designed and what is destined\, and to strike a balance between the two. \nUPSTATE ART WEEKEND (UPAW) is a connective annual event\, for residents and tourists alike\, celebrating the cultural vibrancy of Upstate New York. The fifth edition of UPAW will take place Thursday\, July 18\, through Sunday\, July 21\, 2024\, spanning ten counties in the Catskills Mountains and Hudson Valley.\nUPAW launched in 2020 with 23 participants\, expanding to over 140 this year\, welcoming thousands of visitors to the region. The participants are comprised of local arts organizations\, galleries\, museums\, residencies and creative projects\, mixed with temporary exhibitions and events staged especially for UPAW.\nUPAW compiles a program of events and a comprehensive google map\, which garnered 320k+ views for the 2023 edition and continues to be used as a resource to discover the arts Upstate.\nUPAW has been featured in The New York Times\, artnet news\, The Art Newspaper\, Hyperallergic\, Chronogram\, Cool Hunting and Whitewall\, among others. \nUPSTATE ART WEEKEND was founded by Helen Toomer (STONELEAF RETREAT) and is powered by SPACE design + productions.

SUMMARY:Carve\, Print\, Repeat: Beginner Relief Printing Workshop with Allison Belolan during UPAW
DESCRIPTION:In this beginner-friendly workshop\, on Sunday July 21 as part of Upstate Art Weekend\, artist and printmaker Allison Belolan will introduce you to the expressive potential of relief printmaking using Soft-Kut blocks and safe-wash ink. \nNo prior experience is necessary—just bring a curious mind and willingness to experiment! Relief printmaking is one of the oldest printmaking techniques\, dating back to 8th-century China. This accessible method is popular for its simplicity\, versatility\, and ability to produce multiple copies of bold\, detailed images.  \nUnder Allison’s skilled instruction\, you’ll learn the fundamental relief printing techniques\, from transferring your designs to the block to inking and hand-printing on paper. You’ll also explore the versatility of water-based inks and the satisfying process of carving and editioning your own prints. \nAt the end of the workshop\, you’ll take home your carved Soft-Kut block and the tools to continue printing at home\, so you can keep “carving\, printing\, and repeating” long after the session is over. \n  \nThis paid workshop is open to anyone 18+ interested in learning about relief printmaking and is limited to 12 participants. \n  \nCome to the workshop with a 4×6 black and white sketch or drawing of your image. \nYour image should be on the simple side with no small details and no lettering. \n  \nDRESS FOR MESS! We will get messy\, so wear your best artmaking clothes! \n  \nMATERIALS PROVIDED: \n4×6 Soft-Kut printing block (yours to keep!) \nSafety Lino Cutter handle and blades (yours to keep!) \nBrayers \nBarrens \nPrintmaking paper \nNewsprint \n  \nOPTIONAL TO BRING: \nFolder/portfolio for prints \nPaper \n  \nTickets: \n  \nSocial\, All Access & Artist Member: $48 \nCommunity Member: $54 \nNon-Member: $60  \n  \nAbout Allison Belolan\n\nAllison draws inspiration from observing her environment and intuitively experimenting with repurposed and handcrafted materials for her signature mixed-media abstract landscapes. Her latest artwork features the addition of printmaking processes such as woodcut and intaglio techniques integrated into these mixed media works. Her work appears in art fairs and galleries throughout the United States\, including The Bruce Museum Fine Arts Fair where she won an award for artistic excellence.  Allison studied Printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design and graduated in 2001\, then worked as a jewelry designer until returning to school in 2009. At the School of Visual Arts\, she earned a Master of Arts in Teaching Art Education and taught art in New York public schools until 2019.  Allison lives and works from her home studio in Mamaroneck\, New York.
