SUMMARY:Book Club: Self-Portrait with Nothing by Aimee Pokwatka
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Tuesday March 25 at 6:30pm to discuss Self-Portrait with Nothing by Aimee Pokwatka\, current Yellow Studio Author-in-Residence. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members…and the author herself! That’s right\, Aimee will be joining us in-person for Book Club. \nThis is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \nLight refreshments will be available. \nMember RSVP required. \nThis book is sold out at Bedford Books! But you can purchase the book online here and have it shipped to you.  \n  \nAbout the Book \nOrphan Black meets Fringe in a story that reminds us that living our best life sometimes means embracing the imperfect one we already have. \n“Fraught and deeply moving…the work of a genuinely exciting new talent.” —Booker Prize winner\, George Saunders. \n“Aimee Pokwatka’s Self-Portrait with Nothing is tantalizing and elusive lacework\, delicately balanced between the branches of fantasy\, mystery and realism like a spider’s web.” —The New York Times\n\nIf a picture paints a thousand worlds . . . \nAbandoned as an infant on the local veterinarian’s front porch\, Pepper Rafferty was raised by two loving mothers\, and now\, at thirty-six is married to the stable\, supportive Ike. She’s never told anyone that at fifteen she discovered the identity of her biological mother. \nThat’s because her birth mother is Ula Frost\, a reclusive painter famous for the outrageous claims that her portraits summon their subjects’ doppelgängers from parallel universes. \nResearching the rumors\, Pepper couldn’t help but wonder: Is there a parallel universe in which she is more confident\, more accomplished\, better able to accept love? \nA universe in which Ula decided she was worth keeping? \nA universe in which Ula’s rejection didn’t still hurt too much to share? \nCombining a thrilling pan-continental race against time with an authentic and touching personal drama\, Self-Portrait with Nothing is an unforgettable debut that explores what it means to be part of a family. \nAbout the Author \nAimee Pokwatka grew up in Wheeling\, West Virginia. She studied anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro\, and received her MFA in creative writing from Syracuse University. Her debut novel\, Self-Portrait with Nothing was published in 2022 to wide acclaim. Her work has been published in Fairy Tale Review\, Outlook Springs\, Hunger Mountain\, and elsewhere. She lives in New York with her family. \n  \nLocation: \nBedford Books \n13 Court Rd \nBedford\, NY 10506
