SUMMARY:Book Club: Self-Portrait with Nothing by Aimee Pokwatka
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Tuesday March 25 at 6:30pm to discuss Self-Portrait with Nothing by Aimee Pokwatka\, current Yellow Studio Author-in-Residence. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members…and the author herself! That’s right\, Aimee will be joining us in-person for Book Club. \nThis is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \nLight refreshments will be available. \nMember RSVP required. \nThis book is sold out at Bedford Books! But you can purchase the book online here and have it shipped to you.  \n  \nAbout the Book \nOrphan Black meets Fringe in a story that reminds us that living our best life sometimes means embracing the imperfect one we already have. \n“Fraught and deeply moving…the work of a genuinely exciting new talent.” —Booker Prize winner\, George Saunders. \n“Aimee Pokwatka’s Self-Portrait with Nothing is tantalizing and elusive lacework\, delicately balanced between the branches of fantasy\, mystery and realism like a spider’s web.” —The New York Times\n\nIf a picture paints a thousand worlds . . . \nAbandoned as an infant on the local veterinarian’s front porch\, Pepper Rafferty was raised by two loving mothers\, and now\, at thirty-six is married to the stable\, supportive Ike. She’s never told anyone that at fifteen she discovered the identity of her biological mother. \nThat’s because her birth mother is Ula Frost\, a reclusive painter famous for the outrageous claims that her portraits summon their subjects’ doppelgängers from parallel universes. \nResearching the rumors\, Pepper couldn’t help but wonder: Is there a parallel universe in which she is more confident\, more accomplished\, better able to accept love? \nA universe in which Ula decided she was worth keeping? \nA universe in which Ula’s rejection didn’t still hurt too much to share? \nCombining a thrilling pan-continental race against time with an authentic and touching personal drama\, Self-Portrait with Nothing is an unforgettable debut that explores what it means to be part of a family. \nAbout the Author \nAimee Pokwatka grew up in Wheeling\, West Virginia. She studied anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro\, and received her MFA in creative writing from Syracuse University. Her debut novel\, Self-Portrait with Nothing was published in 2022 to wide acclaim. Her work has been published in Fairy Tale Review\, Outlook Springs\, Hunger Mountain\, and elsewhere. She lives in New York with her family. \n  \nLocation: \nBedford Books \n13 Court Rd \nBedford\, NY 10506

SUMMARY:Opening: From Within featuring Rebecca Rivard
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening of Rebecca Rivard’s solo show\, From Within\, on Saturday March 22 from 4 to 6pm. \nPlease RSVP below. All are welcome.  \nView a selection of artwork images from the exhibition here.\n \n\nView and purchase artwork from the exhibition here. From the Collections dropdown menu please select “From Within.”\n \n\nABOUT THE EXHIBITION \nThe Gallery at Yellow Studio presents “From Within\,” a compelling solo exhibition by mixed-media artist Rebecca Rivard. Running March 22 through April 18\, 2025\, this intimate showcase explores themes of transformation and self-discovery through works that peel back layers to reveal the profound beauty of our inner worlds.  \nIn this evocative body of work\, Rivard masterfully navigates the terrain between external expression and internal reflection. Drawing inspiration from nature’s rhythms and patterns\, she builds richly textured surfaces through multiple layers of acrylic paint and precise linework on various substrates including wood panels and paper that pulse with inner vitality. Like geological formations that hold the story of time within their strata\, her works reveal the accumulated wisdom of experience\, inviting viewers to discover the profound beauty beneath surface appearances and connect with their path of personal evolution. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nRebecca Rivard creates richly layered mixed-media compositions inspired by nature’s rhythms\, exploring the relationship between sound\, texture\, and visual storytelling. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (BFA)\, she further developed her practice through studies in digital music production and composition at Juilliard’s Evening Division. Her signature project\, “52songsforu\,” exemplifies her interdisciplinary approach\, combining original musical compositions with video art. Rivard’s work\, influenced by her deep involvement with the Yellow Studio community\, investigates themes of transformation and self-discovery. Her work has been recognized with an award from Carriage Barn Arts Center\, and exhibitions at Bethany Arts Center\, The Gallery at Yellow Studio\, and the Bedford Art Crawl. An active leader in Westchester’s artistic community\, Rivard serves on the Katonah Museum Artists’ Association board and is a core member of Yellow Studio\, where she creates and collaborates. SUMMARY:Lost and Found Artists' Talk: Carol Bouyoucos and Tina Scepanovic
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday March 8 at 2pm to learn more about the artistic practices\, process\, influences and more of Carol Bouyoucos and Tina Scepanovic. \n  \nAbout the Exhibition \nThe Gallery at Yellow Studio presents “Lost and Found\,” a dynamic two-person exhibition featuring artists Carol Bouyoucos and Tina Scepanovic. On view February 15 to March 14\, this thoughtfully curated show explores the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and technological innovation\, as the artists move in opposite yet complementary directions; one mining the richness of historical techniques\, the other pioneering new digital territories. \nThrough this compelling pairing\, Scepanovic resurrects traditional processes and forgotten materials\, working with centuries-old water gilding techniques and transforming vintage glass to create contemporary meaning from the past. Both artists embrace the creative potential in uncertain\, in-between spaces: Rusek’s work embodies the threshold between material histories and imagined futures\, while Shulman’s canvases capture fleeting moments between the past and the future. \nAll are welcome. SUMMARY:Art Club: Excursion to the Hudson River Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join the Art Club as we explore the Hudson River Museum! We are excited to see and discuss the current shows\, No Bodies: Clothing as Disruptor and It Takes 2: Unexpected Pairings. There will also likely be time to explore other exhibitions independently. \nAbout No Bodies: Clothing as Disruptor \nSimply put\, clothing is what we put on our bodies. We use it both to cover up and to reveal ourselves. It is also a tool we use to understand others. As an artistic medium\, it embodies the tension between opposing forces—private experience and mass consumption\, form and function\, empowerment and vulnerability\, personal expression and cultural expectation. Through bodiless artworks that reimagine and transform clothing\, No Bodies: Clothing as Disruptor offers a multitude of societal portraits and invites visitors to engage with the intimate narratives they evoke. \nThe artists in No Bodies use clothing to play with assumptions about materiality and cultural identity\, and as a vehicle for social and political activism. In Shroud\, a sea of suspended shirts\, Rachel Breen asks us to stand in solidarity with garment workers. Inscribed on Patrick Carroll’s t-shirt\, created in response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade\, are the ingredients of historical abortifacients. Rose Deler points up the cruelty of immigration policy with children’s garments fashioned from the Mylar rescue blankets given to migrants at the U.S. border. In Jesse Krimes’s quilt Skyline\, an inmate’s memories of wellbeing are retained in spite of the oppression of the prison-industrial complex. The beads in Erica Lord’s loom-woven burden strap replicate the pixel-like format of DNA analysis of diseases affecting Indigenous communities. And Karen Shaw transforms a sports jersey into a hoop shirt—a winking reference to a hoop skirt—that subverts gender norms and blends masculine and feminine elements. \nNo Bodies reveals how clothing can convey deeply personal stories while critiquing broader systems of production and regulation. Disrupting familiar clothing conventions\, the artists illustrate how personal expression can reshape cultural and social norms. Their works unravel our presumptions about clothing\, the stories it can carry\, and the psychological weight it can bear. No Bodies asks us to reconsider clothing as not merely attire\, or fashion\, but a dynamic expression of both personal and collective identities. \nFeatured Artists\nReginald Dwayne Betts • John Boone • Marsha Borden • Rachel Breen • Chris Burden • Patrick Carroll • Susan Clinard • Hannah Conradt • E.V. Their juxtaposition may reveal overlapping frames of reference\, draw out previously unnoticed dimensions\, or challenge preconceived notions of universality. \nIn the eight pairings featured here\, each explored under a different theme\, the artworks stand on their own and also hold a mirror to one another. One poignant pairing reveals two striking explorations of love. Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s “Untitled” (L.A.)\, 1991\, is installed near an ornate wedding platter from the 1870s. Gonzalez-Torres’s candy-spill work dates from the same year he lost his beloved partner to an AIDS-related illness and is a testament to their relationship. The ceramic dish\, produced by W. T. Copeland & Sons\, features wedding vows as part of its decoration\, including “in sickness and in health\, to love and to cherish\, till death do us part.” The platter was made to hold food for wedding guests\, just as Gonzalez-Torres meant for visitors to consume the commemorative candy. \nIn other juxtapositions\, works by Georgia O’Keeffe and Andy Warhol invite us to consider organic forms we can encounter everyday from a fresh perspective\, and Winslow Homer’s watercolor of a Florida coastal scene and Catherine Latson’s sculptural dress made of shells suggest changing relationships to nature. Finally\, the fantasy realm of children’s play provides a vehicle for artists JooYoung Choi and Mark O’Banks to rewrite history\, to upend social injustices through invented worlds and very different artistic sensibilities. \nAs we continue our commitment to presenting the Museum’s collection in new and exciting ways\, these comparisons provide opportunities to extract new readings and perspectives on art and artists\, past and present. \nFeatured Artists\nMark Bradford • JooYoung Choi • Felix Gonzalez-Torres • Winslow Homer • Donald Judd • Catherine Latson • Paul Manship • Mark O’Banks • Georgia O’Keeffe • Joe Overstreet • Shizu Saldamando • Joan Snyder • Rigoberto Torres • Andy Warhol • W.T. Copeland & Sons \nSeveral works in this exhibition are generously lent by Art Bridges\, Bentonville\, Arkansas\, as part of the Art Bridges’ Partner Loan Network initiative. \n\nEvent Details:\n\nDate: Friday\, November 8\nTime: Meet at Yellow Studio at 11am for an early lunch at The Whitlock in Katonah (we will drive to the restaurant together) and carpool to the Hudson River Museum or meet at the Hudson River Museum at 1:30pm.\n\nTravel Information:\n\nTo join the group for lunch at The Whitlock and carpool to the Hudson River Museum\, please email tina@yellowstudiony.com.
