SUMMARY:Art Club: Excursion to the Hudson River Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join the Art Club as we explore the Hudson River Museum! We are excited to see and discuss the current shows\, No Bodies: Clothing as Disruptor and It Takes 2: Unexpected Pairings. There will also likely be time to explore other exhibitions independently. \nAbout No Bodies: Clothing as Disruptor \nSimply put\, clothing is what we put on our bodies. We use it both to cover up and to reveal ourselves. It is also a tool we use to understand others. As an artistic medium\, it embodies the tension between opposing forces—private experience and mass consumption\, form and function\, empowerment and vulnerability\, personal expression and cultural expectation. Through bodiless artworks that reimagine and transform clothing\, No Bodies: Clothing as Disruptor offers a multitude of societal portraits and invites visitors to engage with the intimate narratives they evoke. \nThe artists in No Bodies use clothing to play with assumptions about materiality and cultural identity\, and as a vehicle for social and political activism. In Shroud\, a sea of suspended shirts\, Rachel Breen asks us to stand in solidarity with garment workers. Inscribed on Patrick Carroll’s t-shirt\, created in response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade\, are the ingredients of historical abortifacients. Rose Deler points up the cruelty of immigration policy with children’s garments fashioned from the Mylar rescue blankets given to migrants at the U.S. border. In Jesse Krimes’s quilt Skyline\, an inmate’s memories of wellbeing are retained in spite of the oppression of the prison-industrial complex. The beads in Erica Lord’s loom-woven burden strap replicate the pixel-like format of DNA analysis of diseases affecting Indigenous communities. And Karen Shaw transforms a sports jersey into a hoop shirt—a winking reference to a hoop skirt—that subverts gender norms and blends masculine and feminine elements. \nNo Bodies reveals how clothing can convey deeply personal stories while critiquing broader systems of production and regulation. Disrupting familiar clothing conventions\, the artists illustrate how personal expression can reshape cultural and social norms. Their works unravel our presumptions about clothing\, the stories it can carry\, and the psychological weight it can bear. No Bodies asks us to reconsider clothing as not merely attire\, or fashion\, but a dynamic expression of both personal and collective identities. \nFeatured Artists\nReginald Dwayne Betts • John Boone • Marsha Borden • Rachel Breen • Chris Burden • Patrick Carroll • Susan Clinard • Hannah Conradt • E.V. Day • Rose Deler • Lesley Dill • Anindita Dutta • Giannina Dwin • Carlos Estévez • Kathryn Frund • Jonathan Herrera Soto • Jesse Krimes • Robert Kushner • Ruth Lingen • Erica Lord • Whitfield Lovell • Adriana Marmorek • Senga Nengudi • Carol Paik • Sidney Russell • Barbara Ségal • Karen Shaw • Jaune Quick-to-See Smith • Micki Watanabe Spiller • Cindy Tower • Cybèle Young\nCurated by independent curator Alva Greenberg. \n  \nAbout It Takes 2: Unexpected Pairings \nThese unlikely companions\, drawn from the HRM collection\, loans from Art Bridges\, and private collections\, span different centuries\, cultures\, and media. Their juxtaposition may reveal overlapping frames of reference\, draw out previously unnoticed dimensions\, or challenge preconceived notions of universality. \nIn the eight pairings featured here\, each explored under a different theme\, the artworks stand on their own and also hold a mirror to one another. One poignant pairing reveals two striking explorations of love. Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s “Untitled” (L.A.)\, 1991\, is installed near an ornate wedding platter from the 1870s. Gonzalez-Torres’s candy-spill work dates from the same year he lost his beloved partner to an AIDS-related illness and is a testament to their relationship. The ceramic dish\, produced by W. T. Copeland & Sons\, features wedding vows as part of its decoration\, including “in sickness and in health\, to love and to cherish\, till death do us part.” The platter was made to hold food for wedding guests\, just as Gonzalez-Torres meant for visitors to consume the commemorative candy. \nIn other juxtapositions\, works by Georgia O’Keeffe and Andy Warhol invite us to consider organic forms we can encounter everyday from a fresh perspective\, and Winslow Homer’s watercolor of a Florida coastal scene and Catherine Latson’s sculptural dress made of shells suggest changing relationships to nature. Finally\, the fantasy realm of children’s play provides a vehicle for artists JooYoung Choi and Mark O’Banks to rewrite history\, to upend social injustices through invented worlds and very different artistic sensibilities. \nAs we continue our commitment to presenting the Museum’s collection in new and exciting ways\, these comparisons provide opportunities to extract new readings and perspectives on art and artists\, past and present. \nFeatured Artists\nMark Bradford • JooYoung Choi • Felix Gonzalez-Torres • Winslow Homer • Donald Judd • Catherine Latson • Paul Manship • Mark O’Banks • Georgia O’Keeffe • Joe Overstreet • Shizu Saldamando • Joan Snyder • Rigoberto Torres • Andy Warhol • W.T. SUMMARY:Book Club: The Order of Things by Sarah Gormley
DESCRIPTION:New book alert! The Order of Things will be released on September 10…you can pre-order your book on Amazon here. \nJoin us for Book Club at Yellow Studio on Tuesday October 1 at 6:30pm. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members. This is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard (and we will have a very special guest via Zoom…the author herself\, Sarah Gormley!) \nLight refreshments will be available. \nAbout the book: \nWhat happens when a marketing executive leaves San Francisco to care for her dying mother on their family farm in Ohio? A Hallmark heroine would fall in love with her high school sweetheart during a snowstorm-but this is no Hallmark movie. Sarah Gormley spent most of her life trying to outrun the persistent self-loathing that plagued her from childhood\, convinced that self-worth was something she had to earn by doing rather than being. When she returned to Salt Creek Farm at age forty-five\, Gormley had no idea that detaching from the success she believed defined her\, untangling the complicated relationship with her mother\, and continuing the hard work of therapy would lead to a wildly transformed life. Told with exceptional candor and humor\, The Order of Things is a story about how one woman learned to let go of the patterns of her past to create a future she never imagined. Ultimately\, Gormley’s book is about hope\, with a powerful message that will inspire you to think about the possibility of change in your own life. \nAbout Sarah Gormley: \nSarah Gormley owns a contemporary art gallery\, Sarah Gormley Gallery (SGG)\, in Columbus\, Ohio that operates from the belief that original art can be a source of joy for everyone. She opened the gallery in 2019\, 25 years after her grandmother gifted Sarah with her first piece of art when she graduated from DePauw University. Sarah’s undergraduate degree reinforced an early love for literature and writing\, with a heavy sprinkling of the liberal arts fairy dust that teaches you how to think\, analyze and articulate a clear point of view. \nThat foundation was rounded out by concentrations in marketing and operations at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. Her marketing career included both agency work and in-house roles with global brands including IMAX\, Martha Stewart\, Girl Scouts of the USA and Adobe. Sarah was honored as one of 2015’s Forty Women to Watch Over 40\, a list that celebrates women who are upending the perception that 40 is past your prime. She has also been featured in Forbes and The CMO Club. \nIn June of 2019\, Gormley was selected to speak at her 25th class reunion at DePauw University. After she spoke\, a woman Sarah had never met approached her and said\, “You should write a book.” Turns out that woman was celebrated author Meg Kissinger\, a fact Sarah learned only after she asked Meg if she might consider offering a praise quote for The Order of Things – because life is just funny that way.

Raised by a mother who stroked melodies on the piano and stitched intricate quilts\, and a father who sculpted with clay\, glass\, and paint\, Rebecca was surrounded by artistic inspiration. This rich environment fueled her own artistic passion\, leading her to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. \nAfter graduation\, Rebecca dedicated herself to the non-profit sector\, developing art programs for children and training teachers. This hands-on work\, coupled with the joy of sharing her passion with curious young minds\, invigorated her artistic explorations. As a mother of three\, she continued to nurture her creative spirit through various endeavors\, including children’s book illustration and running her own piano studio. \nHer students’ creativity inspired Rebecca to further her education\, studying composition and digital music production at Juilliard’s Evening Division. This blend of music and visual arts culminated in her project\, 52songsforu\, where she created original music paired with self-shot videos. \nToday\, Rebecca’s artwork is a testament to her lifelong journey of creative exploration. Her paintings uniquely weave textures and blend different styles\, often incorporating freestyle elements with linear mappings.
