SUMMARY:Book Club: Accumulation by Aimee Pokwatka
DESCRIPTION:Join us Tuesday\, June 16 at 6:30pm for a special book club gathering at Aimee Pokwatka’s home in Cross River. We will be discussing her latest novel\, Accumulation. There will be time to ask questions\, plus a tour of the house (and its ghosts) that inspired the book! \nThis is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \nLocation address given upon Member RSVP \nLight refreshments will be available. \nMember RSVP required. \nThis book is available for purchase at Bedford Books! You can also purchase the book on the Bedford Books website here and have it shipped to you. \nAbout the Book\nA twisty\, searing\, conversation-starting novel about a filmmaker-turned-housewife who moves into her dream house and is forced to consider whether it’s the house or herself that is haunted. \nWhen documentary filmmaker turned stay-at-home mom Tennessee Cherish moves into the the dream house her husband bought for her\, a brighter future seems to be on the horizon. Even if her husband is frustratingly absent due to his new high-paying job. Even if their two young children begin acting out in strange ways. Even if she feels lonelier than ever. \nDistracted by the endless details that come with moving into a new town\, a new house\, and new schools\, Tenn doesn’t notice when odd things begin happening at home. The faucet that runs at all hours. The creepy doll that seems to show up in every room. The human tooth they found in the floorboards. \nAs the kids’ outbursts and the strange events start to escalate\, the family finds themselves increasingly caught in loops\, repeating everyday actions with dangerous—and then devastating—effects. Tenn realizes she must find the source of what is haunting her family\, before it kills them all. \nTaut and twisty\, scary and searing\, Aimee Pokwatka’s Accumulation lays bare the high price women pay for the promises of domesticity and motherhood\, and the many ways in which families can be haunted. \n  \nAbout the Author \nAimee Pokwatka is the author of the genre-bending novels Accumulation\, Self-Portrait with Nothing\, and The Parliament. Born and raised in Wheeling\, West Virginia\, she studied anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro\, where she helped catalog a collection of archaic-period human skeletal remains. She received her MFA in creative writing from Syracuse University. She has also taught writers of all ages\, and served as the editor of Salt Hill Journal and The Newtowner. She is an active member at Yellow Studio\, where she can often be found writing in her studio in the attic. She lives in a haunted house in New York with her family.

SUMMARY:Book Club: The Correspondent by Virginia Evans
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Tuesday March 17 at 6:30pm to discuss The Correspondent by Virginia Evans. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members. \nThis is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \nLight refreshments will be available. \nMember RSVP required. \nThis book is available for purchase at Bedford Books! You can also purchase the book on the Bedford Books website here and have it shipped to you. \n  \nAbout the Book \nFilled with knowledge that only comes from a life fully lived\, The Correspondent is a novel about the power of finding solace in literature and connection with people we might never meet in person. It is about the hubris of youth and the wisdom of old age\, and the mistakes and acts of kindness that occur during a lifetime. \nSybil Van Antwerp has throughout her life used letters to make sense of the world and her place in it. Most mornings\, around half past ten\, Sybil sits down to write letters—to her brother\, to her best friend\, to the president of the university who will not allow her to audit a class she desperately wants to take\, to Joan Didion and Larry McMurtry to tell them what she thinks of their latest books\, and to one person to whom she writes often yet never sends the letter. \nSybil expects her world to go on as it always has—a mother\, grandmother\, wife\, divorcee\, distinguished lawyer\, she has lived a very full life. But when letters from someone in her past force her to examine one of the most painful periods of her life\, she realizes that the letter she has been writing over the years needs to be read and that she cannot move forward until she finds it in her heart to offer forgiveness. \n  \nAbout the Author\nVirginia Evans is the debut author of the epistolary novel The Correspondent\, known for subtly exploring connection and small-life expansion\, having written it during the pandemic from her closet in Winston-Salem\, NC\, after earning degrees in English literature and creative writing from James Madison University and Trinity College.

SUMMARY:Book Club: Theo of Golden by Allen Levi

There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members. \nThis is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \nLight refreshments will be available. \nMember RSVP required. \nThis book is available for purchase at Bedford Books! SUMMARY:Book Club: The Names by Florence Knapp
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nJoin us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Tuesday November 18 at 6:30pm to discuss The Names by Florence Knapp. You can also purchase the book online here and have it shipped to you.  \n  \nAbout the Book \n\nIn the wake of a catastrophic storm\, Cora sets off with her nine-year-old daughter\, Maia\, to register her son’s birth. Her husband\, Gordon\, a local doctor\, respected in the community but a terrifying and controlling presence at home\, intends for her to name the infant after him. But when the registrar asks what she’d like to call the child\, Cora hesitates… \nSpanning thirty-five years\, what follows are three alternate and alternating versions of Cora’s and her young son’s lives\, shaped by her choice of name. In richly layered prose\, The Names explores the painful ripple effects of domestic abuse\, the messy ties of family\, and the possibilities of autonomy and healing. \nWith exceptional sensitivity and depth\, Knapp draws us into the story of one family\, told through a prism of what-ifs\, causing us to consider the “one . . . precious life” we are given. The book’s brilliantly imaginative structure\, propulsive storytelling\, and emotional\, gut-wrenching power are certain to make The Names a modern classic. \n\n\nAbout the Author\n\nFlorence Knapp has previously written a nonfiction book about a centuries-old method of quilt making\, as well as contributing to a book for the Victoria and Albert Museum. She lives just outside London with her husband and their dog. Their two children have now flown the nest. The Names is Knapp’s debut novel and will be translated into more than twenty languages.

DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \nJoin us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Tuesday October 21 at 6:30pm to discuss A Marriage at Sea by Sophie Elmhirst. You can also purchase the book online here and have it shipped to you.  \n  \nAbout the Book \nMaurice and Maralyn make an odd couple. He’s a loner\, awkward and obsessive; she’s charismatic and ambitious. But they share a horror of wasting their lives. And they dream – as we all dream – of running away from it all. What if they quit their jobs\, sold their house\, bought a boat\, and sailed away? \nMost of us begin and end with the daydream. But in June 1972\, Maurice and Maralyn set sail. For nearly a year all went well\, until deep in the Pacific\, a breaching whale knocked a hole in their boat and it sank beneath the waves. \nWhat ensues is a jaw-dropping fight to survive in the wild ocean\, with little hope of rescue. Alone together for months in a tiny rubber raft\, starving and exhausted\, Maurice and Maralyn have to find not only ways to stay alive but ways to get along\, as their inner demons emerge and their marriage is put to the greatest of tests. Although they could run away from the world\, they can’t run away from themselves. \nTaut\, propulsive\, and dazzling\, A Marriage at Sea pairs an adrenaline-fueled high seas adventure with a gutting love story that asks why we love difficult people\, and who we become under the most extreme conditions imaginable. \n  \nAbout the Author \nSophie Elmhirst is an award-winning journalist who writes regularly for The Guardian Long Read and The Economist; her work has also appeared in The New York Times Magazine\, The New Yorker\, and Harper’s Bazaar\, among other places. She’s the winner of the British Press Award for Feature Writer of the Year and a Foreign Press Award. DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Monday June 23 at 6:30pm to discuss That Bird Has My Wings by Jarvis Jay Masters. You can also purchase the book online here and have it shipped to you.  \n  \nAbout the Book \nThe moving memoir of a Death Row inmate who discovers Buddhism and becomes an inspirational role model for fellow inmates\, guards\, and a growing public. \nIn 1990\, while serving a sentence in San Quentin for armed robbery\, Jarvis Jay Masters was implicated as an accessory in the murder of a prison guard. A 23-year-old Black man\, Jarvis was sentenced to death in the gas chamber. While in the maximum security section of Death Row\, using the only instrument available to him—a ball-point pen filler—Masters’s astounding memoir is a testament to the tenacity of the human spirit and the talent of a fine writer. \nOffering us scenes from his life that are at times poignant\, revelatory\, frightening\, soul-stirring\, painful\, funny and uplifting\, That Bird Has My Wings tells the story of the author’s childhood with parents addicted to heroin\, an abusive foster family\, a life of crime and imprisonment\, and the eventual embracing of Buddhism. Masters’s story drew the attention of luminaries in the world of American Buddhism\, including Pema Chodron\, who wrote a story about him for O Magazine and offers a foreword to the book. \nThirty-two years after his conviction\, Masters is still on Death Row. A growing movement of people believe Masters is innocent\, and are actively working within the legal system to free him. \n  \nAbout the Author \nAn inmate at San Quentin since the age of nineteen\, Jarvis Jay Masters is the author of Finding Freedom as well as many articles. In 1992\, Masters won a PEN Award for his poem “Recipe for Prison Pruno.” \nIn 1990\, Masters was moved to death row after being convicted of conspiracy in the murder of a prison guard. In April 2008\, the California Supreme Court ordered an evidentiary hearing based on the lack of substantial evidence for Masters’s conviction. Many people believe in Masters’s innocence and are actively working within the legal system to free him. \n  \nLocation: \nBedford Books\n13 Court Rd\nBedford\, NY 10506

SUMMARY:Book Club: On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Tuesday May 27 at 6:30pm to discuss On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan. You can also purchase the book online here and have it shipped to you.  \n  \nAbout the Book \nA novel of remarkable depth and poignancy from one of the most acclaimed writers of our time. \nIt is July 1962. Florence is a talented musician who dreams of a career on the concert stage and of the perfect life she will create with Edward\, an earnest young history student at University College of London\, who unexpectedly wooed and won her heart. Newly married that morning\, both virgins\, Edward and Florence arrive at a hotel on the Dorset coast. At dinner in their rooms they struggle to suppress their worries about the wedding night to come. Edward\, eager for rapture\, frets over Florence’s response to his advances and nurses a private fear of failure\, while Florence’s anxieties run deeper: she is overcome by sheer disgust at the idea of physical contact\, but dreads disappointing her husband when they finally lie down together in the honeymoon suite. \nIan McEwan has caught with understanding and compassion the innocence of Edward and Florence at a time when marriage was presumed to be the outward sign of maturity and independence. On Chesil Beach is another masterwork from McEwan—a story of lives transformed by a gesture not made or a word not spoken. \n  \nAbout the Author \nIan McEwan studied at the University of Sussex\, where he received a BA degree in English Literature in 1970 and later received his MA degree in English Literature at the University of East Anglia. \nMcEwan’s works have earned him worldwide critical acclaim. He won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1976 for his first collection of short stories First Love\, Last Rites; the Whitbread Novel Award (1987) and the Prix Fémina Etranger (1993) for The Child in Time; and Germany’s Shakespeare Prize in 1999. He has been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize for Fiction numerous times\, winning the award for Amsterdam in 1998. His novel Atonement received the WH Smith Literary Award (2002)\, National Book Critics’ Circle Fiction Award (2003)\, Los Angeles Times Prize for Fiction (2003)\, and the Santiago Prize for the European Novel (2004). He was awarded a CBE in 2000. In 2006\, he won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his novel Saturday and his novel On Chesil Beach was named Galaxy Book of the Year at the 2008 British Book Awards where McEwan was also named Reader’s Digest Author of the Year. \nMcEwan lives in London. \n  \nLocation: \nBedford Books\n13 Court Rd\nBedford\, NY 10506

SUMMARY:Book Club: Self-Portrait with Nothing by Aimee Pokwatka
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Tuesday March 25 at 6:30pm to discuss Self-Portrait with Nothing by Aimee Pokwatka\, current Yellow Studio Author-in-Residence. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members…and the author herself! That’s right\, Aimee will be joining us in-person for Book Club. \nThis is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \nLight refreshments will be available. \nMember RSVP required. \nThis book is sold out at Bedford Books! But you can purchase the book online here and have it shipped to you.  \n  \nAbout the Book \nOrphan Black meets Fringe in a story that reminds us that living our best life sometimes means embracing the imperfect one we already have. \n“Fraught and deeply moving…the work of a genuinely exciting new talent.” —Booker Prize winner\, George Saunders. \n“Aimee Pokwatka’s Self-Portrait with Nothing is tantalizing and elusive lacework\, delicately balanced between the branches of fantasy\, mystery and realism like a spider’s web.” —The New York Times\n\nIf a picture paints a thousand worlds . . . \nAbandoned as an infant on the local veterinarian’s front porch\, Pepper Rafferty was raised by two loving mothers\, and now\, at thirty-six is married to the stable\, supportive Ike. She’s never told anyone that at fifteen she discovered the identity of her biological mother. \nThat’s because her birth mother is Ula Frost\, a reclusive painter famous for the outrageous claims that her portraits summon their subjects’ doppelgängers from parallel universes. \nResearching the rumors\, Pepper couldn’t help but wonder: Is there a parallel universe in which she is more confident\, more accomplished\, better able to accept love? \nA universe in which Ula decided she was worth keeping? \nA universe in which Ula’s rejection didn’t still hurt too much to share? \nCombining a thrilling pan-continental race against time with an authentic and touching personal drama\, Self-Portrait with Nothing is an unforgettable debut that explores what it means to be part of a family. \nAbout the Author \nAimee Pokwatka grew up in Wheeling\, West Virginia. She studied anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro\, and received her MFA in creative writing from Syracuse University. Her debut novel\, Self-Portrait with Nothing was published in 2022 to wide acclaim. Her work has been published in Fairy Tale Review\, Outlook Springs\, Hunger Mountain\, and elsewhere. She lives in New York with her family. \n  \nLocation: \nBedford Books \n13 Court Rd \nBedford\, NY 10506

SUMMARY:Book Club: Sweet Fury by Sash Bischoff
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Tuesday February 25 at 6:30pm to discuss Sweet Fury by Sash Bischoff. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members. This is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nAnnouncement! We will have a very special guest at Book Club\, the author herself: Sash Bischoff!  \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \nLight refreshments will be available. \nYS Member RSVP required. \nThis book is available for purchase at Bedford Books.  \nLocation: \nBedford Books\n13 Court Road\nBedford\, NY 10506 \n  \nAbout the book: \n\n\nWhen a beloved actress is cast in a feminist adaptation of a Fitzgerald classic\, she finds herself the victim in a deadly game of revenge in which everyone\, on screen and off\, is playing a part. \n“Cunningly ambitious\, twisty\, and immersive\, it seduces you into a story so compelling that you aren’t ready for the sucker-punch of its deeper truths. This is a hell of a debut.” —Rebecca Makkai\n\n\nLila Crayne is America’s sweetheart: she’s generous and kind\, gorgeous and magnetic. She and her fiancé\, visionary filmmaker Kurt Royall\, have settled into a stunning new West Village apartment and are set to begin filming their feminist adaptation of Fitzgerald’s Tender Is the Night.\n\n\nTo prepare for the leading role\, Lila begins working with charming and accomplished therapist Jonah Gabriel to dig into the trauma of her past. Soon\, Lila’s impeccably manicured life begins to unravel on the therapy couch—and Jonah is just the man to pick up the pieces. But everyone has a secret\, and no one is quite who they seem.\n\n\nA twisty\, thought-provoking novel of construction and deconstruction in conversation with the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald and told through the lens of the film industry\, Sweet Fury is an incisive and bold critique of America’s deep-rooted misogyny. With this novel\, Bischoff examines the narratives we tell ourselves\, and what happens when we co-opt others into those stories; and she probes the blurred lines between victim and perpetrator and the true meaning of justice.\n  \n\n\n\nAbout the Author: \nSash Bischoff is a writer and theater director. She has written plays that have been developed at theaters throughout the US. As a director\, she has worked on Broadway and off. Broadway/National Tours include Dear Evan Hansen\, The Visit\, On the Town\, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying\, and Shrek. Sash grew up as an actor and won the National Arts Award (NFAA) for Acting. She currently lives in New York with her husband and their many pets. Sweet Fury is her first novel.

SUMMARY:Book Club: The Man Who Could Move Clouds by Ingrid Rojas Contreras
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Tuesday January 28 at 6:30pm to discuss The Man Who Could Move Clouds by Ingrid Rojas Contreras. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members. This is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \nLight refreshments will be available. \nRSVP required. \nThis book is available for purchase at Bedford Books. Only a few copies left! \nLocation: \nBedford Books\n13 Court Road\nBedford\, NY 10506 \n  \nAbout the book: \n\n\nPULITZER PRIZE FINALIST • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • From the bestselling author of Fruit of the Drunken Tree\, comes a dazzling\, kaleidoscopic memoir reclaiming her family’s otherworldly legacy. A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: TIME\, NPR\, VULTURE\, PEOPLE\, BOSTON GLOBE\, VANITY FAIR\, ESQUIRE\, & MORE. “Rojas Contreras reacquaints herself with her family’s past\, weaving their stories with personal narrative\, unraveling legacies of violence\, machismo and colonialism… In the process\, she has written a spellbinding and genre-defying ancestral history.”—New York Times Book Review For Ingrid Rojas Contreras\, magic runs in the family. Raised amid the political violence of 1980s and ’90s Colombia\, in a house bustling with her mother’s fortune-telling clients\, she was a hard child to surprise. Her maternal grandfather\, Nono\, was a renowned curandero\, a community healer gifted with what the family called “the secrets”: the power to talk to the dead\, tell the future\, treat the sick\, and move the clouds. And as the first woman to inherit “the secrets\,” Rojas Contreras’ mother was just as powerful. Mami delighted in her ability to appear in two places at once\, and she could cast out even the most persistent spirits with nothing more than a glass of water. This legacy had always felt like it belonged to her mother and grandfather\, until\, while living in the U.S. in her twenties\, Rojas Contreras suffered a head injury that left her with amnesia. As she regained partial memory\, her family was excited to tell her that this had happened before: Decades ago Mami had taken a fall that left her with amnesia\, too. And when she recovered\, she had gained access to “the secrets.”In 2012\, spurred by a shared dream among Mami and her sisters\, and her own powerful urge to relearn her family history in the aftermath of her memory loss\, Rojas Contreras joins her mother on a journey to Colombia to disinter Nono’s remains. With Mami as her unpredictable\, stubborn\, and often amusing guide\, Rojas Contreras traces her lineage back to her Indigenous and Spanish roots\, uncovering the violent and rigid colonial narrative that would eventually break her mestizo family into two camps: those who believe “the secrets” are a gift\, and those who are convinced they are a curse.Interweaving family stories more enchanting than those in any novel\, resurrected Colombian history\, and her own deeply personal reckonings with the bounds of reality\, Rojas Contreras writes her way through the incomprehensible and into her inheritance. The result is a luminous testament to the power of storytelling as a healing art and an invitation to embrace the extraordinary.\n\n\n\nAbout Ingrid Rojas Contreras: \nIngrid Rojas Contreras was born and raised in Bogotá\, Colombia. Her first novel Fruit of the Drunken Tree was the silver medal winner in First Fiction from the California Book Awards\, and a New York Times editor’s choice. Her essays and short stories have appeared in the New York Times Magazine\, The Believer\, and Zyzzyva\, among others. She lives in California.
