SUMMARY:Book Club: That Bird Has My Wings by Jarvis Jay Masters
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Monday June 23 at 6:30pm to discuss That Bird Has My Wings by Jarvis Jay Masters. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members. \nThis is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \nLight refreshments will be available. \nMember RSVP required. \nThis book is available for purchase at Bedford Books! You can also purchase the book online here and have it shipped to you.  \n  \nAbout the Book \nThe moving memoir of a Death Row inmate who discovers Buddhism and becomes an inspirational role model for fellow inmates\, guards\, and a growing public. \nIn 1990\, while serving a sentence in San Quentin for armed robbery\, Jarvis Jay Masters was implicated as an accessory in the murder of a prison guard. A 23-year-old Black man\, Jarvis was sentenced to death in the gas chamber. While in the maximum security section of Death Row\, using the only instrument available to him—a ball-point pen filler—Masters’s astounding memoir is a testament to the tenacity of the human spirit and the talent of a fine writer. \nOffering us scenes from his life that are at times poignant\, revelatory\, frightening\, soul-stirring\, painful\, funny and uplifting\, That Bird Has My Wings tells the story of the author’s childhood with parents addicted to heroin\, an abusive foster family\, a life of crime and imprisonment\, and the eventual embracing of Buddhism. Masters’s story drew the attention of luminaries in the world of American Buddhism\, including Pema Chodron\, who wrote a story about him for O Magazine and offers a foreword to the book. \nThirty-two years after his conviction\, Masters is still on Death Row. A growing movement of people believe Masters is innocent\, and are actively working within the legal system to free him. \n  \nAbout the Author \nAn inmate at San Quentin since the age of nineteen\, Jarvis Jay Masters is the author of Finding Freedom as well as many articles. In 1992\, Masters won a PEN Award for his poem “Recipe for Prison Pruno.” \nIn 1990\, Masters was moved to death row after being convicted of conspiracy in the murder of a prison guard. In April 2008\, the California Supreme Court ordered an evidentiary hearing based on the lack of substantial evidence for Masters’s conviction. Many people believe in Masters’s innocence and are actively working within the legal system to free him. \n  \nLocation: \nBedford Books\n13 Court Rd\nBedford\, NY 10506

SUMMARY:Book Club: On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Tuesday May 27 at 6:30pm to discuss On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan. \n  \nAbout the Book \nA novel of remarkable depth and poignancy from one of the most acclaimed writers of our time. \nIt is July 1962. Florence is a talented musician who dreams of a career on the concert stage and of the perfect life she will create with Edward\, an earnest young history student at University College of London\, who unexpectedly wooed and won her heart. Newly married that morning\, both virgins\, Edward and Florence arrive at a hotel on the Dorset coast. At dinner in their rooms they struggle to suppress their worries about the wedding night to come. Edward\, eager for rapture\, frets over Florence’s response to his advances and nurses a private fear of failure\, while Florence’s anxieties run deeper: she is overcome by sheer disgust at the idea of physical contact\, but dreads disappointing her husband when they finally lie down together in the honeymoon suite. \nIan McEwan has caught with understanding and compassion the innocence of Edward and Florence at a time when marriage was presumed to be the outward sign of maturity and independence. On Chesil Beach is another masterwork from McEwan—a story of lives transformed by a gesture not made or a word not spoken. \n  \nAbout the Author \nIan McEwan studied at the University of Sussex\, where he received a BA degree in English Literature in 1970 and later received his MA degree in English Literature at the University of East Anglia. \nMcEwan’s works have earned him worldwide critical acclaim. He won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1976 for his first collection of short stories First Love\, Last Rites; the Whitbread Novel Award (1987) and the Prix Fémina Etranger (1993) for The Child in Time; and Germany’s Shakespeare Prize in 1999. He has been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize for Fiction numerous times\, winning the award for Amsterdam in 1998. His novel Atonement received the WH Smith Literary Award (2002)\, National Book Critics’ Circle Fiction Award (2003)\, Los Angeles Times Prize for Fiction (2003)\, and the Santiago Prize for the European Novel (2004). He was awarded a CBE in 2000. In 2006\, he won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his novel Saturday and his novel On Chesil Beach was named Galaxy Book of the Year at the 2008 British Book Awards where McEwan was also named Reader’s Digest Author of the Year. \nMcEwan lives in London. \n  \nLocation: \nBedford Books\n13 Court Rd\nBedford\, NY 10506

SUMMARY:Book Club: Self-Portrait with Nothing by Aimee Pokwatka
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Tuesday March 25 at 6:30pm to discuss Self-Portrait with Nothing by Aimee Pokwatka\, current Yellow Studio Author-in-Residence. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members…and the author herself! That’s right\, Aimee will be joining us in-person for Book Club. \nThis is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \nLight refreshments will be available. \nMember RSVP required. \nThis book is sold out at Bedford Books! But you can purchase the book online here and have it shipped to you.  \n  \nAbout the Book \nOrphan Black meets Fringe in a story that reminds us that living our best life sometimes means embracing the imperfect one we already have. \n“Fraught and deeply moving…the work of a genuinely exciting new talent.” —Booker Prize winner\, George Saunders. \n“Aimee Pokwatka’s Self-Portrait with Nothing is tantalizing and elusive lacework\, delicately balanced between the branches of fantasy\, mystery and realism like a spider’s web.” —The New York Times\n\nIf a picture paints a thousand worlds . . . \nAbandoned as an infant on the local veterinarian’s front porch\, Pepper Rafferty was raised by two loving mothers\, and now\, at thirty-six is married to the stable\, supportive Ike. She’s never told anyone that at fifteen she discovered the identity of her biological mother. \nThat’s because her birth mother is Ula Frost\, a reclusive painter famous for the outrageous claims that her portraits summon their subjects’ doppelgängers from parallel universes. \nResearching the rumors\, Pepper couldn’t help but wonder: Is there a parallel universe in which she is more confident\, more accomplished\, better able to accept love? \nA universe in which Ula decided she was worth keeping? \nA universe in which Ula’s rejection didn’t still hurt too much to share? \nCombining a thrilling pan-continental race against time with an authentic and touching personal drama\, Self-Portrait with Nothing is an unforgettable debut that explores what it means to be part of a family. \nAbout the Author \nAimee Pokwatka grew up in Wheeling\, West Virginia. She studied anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro\, and received her MFA in creative writing from Syracuse University. Her debut novel\, Self-Portrait with Nothing was published in 2022 to wide acclaim. Her work has been published in Fairy Tale Review\, Outlook Springs\, Hunger Mountain\, and elsewhere. She lives in New York with her family. \n  \nLocation: \nBedford Books \n13 Court Rd \nBedford\, NY 10506

SUMMARY:Book Club: Sweet Fury by Sash Bischoff
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Tuesday February 25 at 6:30pm to discuss Sweet Fury by Sash Bischoff. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members. This is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nAnnouncement! We will have a very special guest at Book Club\, the author herself: Sash Bischoff!  \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \nLight refreshments will be available. \nYS Member RSVP required. \nThis book is available for purchase at Bedford Books.  \nLocation: \nBedford Books\n13 Court Road\nBedford\, NY 10506 \n  \nAbout the book: \n\n\nWhen a beloved actress is cast in a feminist adaptation of a Fitzgerald classic\, she finds herself the victim in a deadly game of revenge in which everyone\, on screen and off\, is playing a part. \n“Cunningly ambitious\, twisty\, and immersive\, it seduces you into a story so compelling that you aren’t ready for the sucker-punch of its deeper truths. This is a hell of a debut.” —Rebecca Makkai\n\n\nLila Crayne is America’s sweetheart: she’s generous and kind\, gorgeous and magnetic. She and her fiancé\, visionary filmmaker Kurt Royall\, have settled into a stunning new West Village apartment and are set to begin filming their feminist adaptation of Fitzgerald’s Tender Is the Night.\n\n\nTo prepare for the leading role\, Lila begins working with charming and accomplished therapist Jonah Gabriel to dig into the trauma of her past. Soon\, Lila’s impeccably manicured life begins to unravel on the therapy couch—and Jonah is just the man to pick up the pieces. But everyone has a secret\, and no one is quite who they seem.\n\n\nA twisty\, thought-provoking novel of construction and deconstruction in conversation with the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald and told through the lens of the film industry\, Sweet Fury is an incisive and bold critique of America’s deep-rooted misogyny. With this novel\, Bischoff examines the narratives we tell ourselves\, and what happens when we co-opt others into those stories; and she probes the blurred lines between victim and perpetrator and the true meaning of justice.\n  \n\n\n\nAbout the Author: \nSash Bischoff is a writer and theater director. She has written plays that have been developed at theaters throughout the US. As a director\, she has worked on Broadway and off. Broadway/National Tours include Dear Evan Hansen\, The Visit\, On the Town\, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying\, and Shrek. Sash grew up as an actor and won the National Arts Award (NFAA) for Acting. She currently lives in New York with her husband and their many pets. Sweet Fury is her first novel.

SUMMARY:Book Club: The Man Who Could Move Clouds by Ingrid Rojas Contreras
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Tuesday January 28 at 6:30pm to discuss The Man Who Could Move Clouds by Ingrid Rojas Contreras. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members. This is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \nLight refreshments will be available. \nRSVP required. \nThis book is available for purchase at Bedford Books. Only a few copies left! \nLocation: \nBedford Books\n13 Court Road\nBedford\, NY 10506 \n  \nAbout the book: \n\n\nPULITZER PRIZE FINALIST • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • From the bestselling author of Fruit of the Drunken Tree\, comes a dazzling\, kaleidoscopic memoir reclaiming her family’s otherworldly legacy. A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: TIME\, NPR\, VULTURE\, PEOPLE\, BOSTON GLOBE\, VANITY FAIR\, ESQUIRE\, & MORE. “Rojas Contreras reacquaints herself with her family’s past\, weaving their stories with personal narrative\, unraveling legacies of violence\, machismo and colonialism… In the process\, she has written a spellbinding and genre-defying ancestral history.”—New York Times Book Review For Ingrid Rojas Contreras\, magic runs in the family. Raised amid the political violence of 1980s and ’90s Colombia\, in a house bustling with her mother’s fortune-telling clients\, she was a hard child to surprise. Her maternal grandfather\, Nono\, was a renowned curandero\, a community healer gifted with what the family called “the secrets”: the power to talk to the dead\, tell the future\, treat the sick\, and move the clouds. And as the first woman to inherit “the secrets\,” Rojas Contreras’ mother was just as powerful. Mami delighted in her ability to appear in two places at once\, and she could cast out even the most persistent spirits with nothing more than a glass of water. This legacy had always felt like it belonged to her mother and grandfather\, until\, while living in the U.S. in her twenties\, Rojas Contreras suffered a head injury that left her with amnesia. As she regained partial memory\, her family was excited to tell her that this had happened before: Decades ago Mami had taken a fall that left her with amnesia\, too. And when she recovered\, she had gained access to “the secrets.”In 2012\, spurred by a shared dream among Mami and her sisters\, and her own powerful urge to relearn her family history in the aftermath of her memory loss\, Rojas Contreras joins her mother on a journey to Colombia to disinter Nono’s remains. With Mami as her unpredictable\, stubborn\, and often amusing guide\, Rojas Contreras traces her lineage back to her Indigenous and Spanish roots\, uncovering the violent and rigid colonial narrative that would eventually break her mestizo family into two camps: those who believe “the secrets” are a gift\, and those who are convinced they are a curse.Interweaving family stories more enchanting than those in any novel\, resurrected Colombian history\, and her own deeply personal reckonings with the bounds of reality\, Rojas Contreras writes her way through the incomprehensible and into her inheritance. The result is a luminous testament to the power of storytelling as a healing art and an invitation to embrace the extraordinary.\n\n\n\nAbout Ingrid Rojas Contreras: \nIngrid Rojas Contreras was born and raised in Bogotá\, Colombia. Her first novel Fruit of the Drunken Tree was the silver medal winner in First Fiction from the California Book Awards\, and a New York Times editor’s choice. Her essays and short stories have appeared in the New York Times Magazine\, The Believer\, and Zyzzyva\, among others. She lives in California.

SUMMARY:Book Club: The Housemaid by Freida McFadden
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Yellow Studio on Tuesday December 3 at 6:30pm to discuss The Housemaid by Freida McFadden. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members. This is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \nLight refreshments will be available. \nAbout the book: \n“Welcome to the family\,” Nina Winchester says as I shake her elegant\, manicured hand. I smile politely\, gazing around the marble hallway. Working here is my last chance to start fresh. I can pretend to be whoever I like. But I’ll soon learn that the Winchesters’ secrets are far more dangerous than my own… \nEvery day I clean the Winchesters’ beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor. \nI try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew’s handsome brown eyes\, so full of pain\, it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina’s life. The walk-in closet\, the fancy car\, the perfect husband. \nI only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out… and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside\, it’s far too late. \nBut I reassure myself: the Winchesters don’t know who I really am. \nThey don’t know what I’m capable of… \nAn unbelievably twisty read that will have you glued to the pages late into the night. Anyone who loves The Woman in the Window\, The Wife Between Us and The Girl on the Train won’t be able to put this down! \n  \nAbout Freida McFadden: \n#1 New York Times\, Amazon Charts\, USA Today\, Washington Post\, Wall Street Journal\, Sunday Times\, and Publisher’s Weekly bestselling author Freida McFadden is a physician specializing in brain injury who has penned multiple bestselling psychological thrillers and medical humor novels. SUMMARY:Book Club: The Order of Things by Sarah Gormley
DESCRIPTION:New book alert! The Order of Things will be released on September 10…you can pre-order your book on Amazon here. \nJoin us for Book Club at Yellow Studio on Tuesday October 1 at 6:30pm. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members. This is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard (and we will have a very special guest via Zoom…the author herself\, Sarah Gormley!) \nLight refreshments will be available. \nAbout the book: \nWhat happens when a marketing executive leaves San Francisco to care for her dying mother on their family farm in Ohio? A Hallmark heroine would fall in love with her high school sweetheart during a snowstorm-but this is no Hallmark movie. Sarah Gormley spent most of her life trying to outrun the persistent self-loathing that plagued her from childhood\, convinced that self-worth was something she had to earn by doing rather than being. When she returned to Salt Creek Farm at age forty-five\, Gormley had no idea that detaching from the success she believed defined her\, untangling the complicated relationship with her mother\, and continuing the hard work of therapy would lead to a wildly transformed life. Told with exceptional candor and humor\, The Order of Things is a story about how one woman learned to let go of the patterns of her past to create a future she never imagined. Ultimately\, Gormley’s book is about hope\, with a powerful message that will inspire you to think about the possibility of change in your own life. \nAbout Sarah Gormley: \nSarah Gormley owns a contemporary art gallery\, Sarah Gormley Gallery (SGG)\, in Columbus\, Ohio that operates from the belief that original art can be a source of joy for everyone. She opened the gallery in 2019\, 25 years after her grandmother gifted Sarah with her first piece of art when she graduated from DePauw University. Sarah’s undergraduate degree reinforced an early love for literature and writing\, with a heavy sprinkling of the liberal arts fairy dust that teaches you how to think\, analyze and articulate a clear point of view. \nThat foundation was rounded out by concentrations in marketing and operations at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. Her marketing career included both agency work and in-house roles with global brands including IMAX\, Martha Stewart\, Girl Scouts of the USA and Adobe. Sarah was honored as one of 2015’s Forty Women to Watch Over 40\, a list that celebrates women who are upending the perception that 40 is past your prime. She has also been featured in Forbes and The CMO Club. \nIn June of 2019\, Gormley was selected to speak at her 25th class reunion at DePauw University. After she spoke\, a woman Sarah had never met approached her and said\, “You should write a book.” Turns out that woman was celebrated author Meg Kissinger\, a fact Sarah learned only after she asked Meg if she might consider offering a praise quote for The Order of Things – because life is just funny that way.

Morgan’s personal librarian\, Belle da Costa Greene\, the Black American woman who was forced to hide her true identity and pass as white in order to leave a lasting legacy that enriched our nation\, from New York Times bestselling authors Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray. \nIn her twenties\, Belle da Costa Greene is hired by J. P. Morgan to curate a collection of rare manuscripts\, books\, and artwork for his newly built Pierpont Morgan Library. Belle becomes a fixture in New York City society and one of the most powerful people in the art and book world\, known for her impeccable taste and shrewd negotiating for critical works as she helps create a world-class collection. \nBut Belle has a secret\, one she must protect at all costs. She was born not Belle da Costa Greene but Belle Marion Greener. She is the daughter of Richard Greener\, the first Black graduate of Harvard and a well-known advocate for equality. Belle’s complexion isn’t dark because of her alleged Portuguese heritage that lets her pass as white–her complexion is dark because she is African American. \nThe Personal Librarian tells the story of an extraordinary woman\, famous for her intellect\, style\, and wit\, and shares the lengths she must go to–for the protection of her family and her legacy–to preserve her carefully crafted white identity in the racist world in which she lives. \nABOUT THE AUTHORS\nMarie Benedict is a lawyer with more than ten years’ experience as a litigator. A graduate of Boston College and the Boston University School of Law\, she is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Only Woman in the Room\, The Mystery of Mrs. Christie\, Carnegie’s Maid\, The Other Einstein\, and Lady Clementine. All have been translated into multiple languages. She lives in Pittsburgh with her family. \nVictoria Christopher Murray is an acclaimed author with more than one million books in print. She has written more than twenty novels\, including Stand Your Ground\, an NAACP Image Award Winner for Outstanding Fiction and a Library Journal Best Book of the Year. She holds an MBA from the NYU Stern School of Business. \n
