SUMMARY:Nature & Sustainability Club: The Art of Botanical Pressing with Marguerite Alpert
DESCRIPTION:For all interested artists of nature: this class on Wednesday July 15 at 6pm is an opportunity to learn how to press fresh flowers using a wooden flower press (yours to keep). We will focus on a variety of techniques and materials for success. There will be plenty of opportunities for questions and discussions on the history\, science\, and design of pressed botanical art. Prepare for a creative\, relaxing\, and informative experience! \nAll materials will be provided. Be sure to bring your creative ideas and questions. \nAll participants may bring a favorite fresh flower or leaf from their garden\, if they wish. \nSpace is limited to 10 participants.  \nOrganized by Sarah Ehrlich & Mona Lipson \n  \nAbout Marguerite Alpert \nMy artwork transforms pressed and dried botanical materials into compositions that invite close observation. I deconstruct flowers into their smallest components – individual petals\, sepals\, and fragments and use these elements as building blocks for larger designs. Through this process\, I aim to present familiar natural materials in unexpected ways\, encouraging viewers to see them with fresh eyes.  \nViewers frequently mistake my botanical compositions for watercolor paintings or pen and ink drawings\, only to discover with delightful surprise that they are observing actual plant matter. This moment of revelation consistently draws people closer to examine the work more carefully\, a response that lies at the heart of my artistic intention.  \nMy practice centers on revealing the extraordinary within the ordinary\, highlighting the intricate details in nature that we often overlook. The transformation that occurs during the pressing and drying process is itself a form of artistic alchemy. Fresh flowers and leaves give up their three-dimensional form\, becoming flattened through the application of pressure and time. This metamorphosis reveals hidden structures: the delicate network of veins threading through petals becomes visible\, colors also shift and intensify in unexpected ways\, and textures emerge that were previously obscured by the plant’s fresh form.  \nMy work celebrates both the fragility and resilience of botanical life. My goal is to slow down the viewer’s gaze to foster a deeper appreciation for the complex beauty of nature that surrounds us every day.

Join the Nature & Sustainability Club on Monday June 8 at 6pm for a peaceful evening walk along the Cross River. \nThis riverside trail winds gently through Ward Pound Ridge Reservation\, following the original Cross River as it curves through forest and wetland. Early June is a beautiful time to be out here: the woods are quiet\, the water is moving\, and the landscape is blooming. We’ll enjoy an approximately one-hour hike at a relaxed\, conversational pace\, with time to pause and take in the scenery. \nWard Pound Ridge is Westchester County’s largest park\, spanning over 4\,000 acres of protected land. The reservation preserves diverse ecosystems and historic waterways\, offering a rare sense of calm and continuity with the natural world. No prior weaving experience is needed—just a willingness to explore\, experiment\, and connect. \nParticipants will leave with a one-of-a-kind woven pouch and a renewed appreciation for the beauty of natural and repurposed materials. \nSpace is limited to 12 participants.  \n  \nAbout Rebecca Rivard \nRebecca Rivard is a multidisciplinary artist\, painter\, and composer working across paint\, sound\, and mixed media. The lake is stunning\, especially at dusk\, and there is often a resident eagle gliding above the trees! Members meandering the trails enjoy the beautiful flora\, fauna and other natural wonders that make our community unique. The trail system is one of the largest remaining networks of private trails. Join the Nature & Sustainability Club for a scenic hike on November 18 at 9:30am followed by mid-morning scones\, provided by 351 Bakery\, and coffee and tea at Yellow Studio. \nWe’ll be heading to Ward Pound Ridge for a group hike\, starting at the Trailside Nature Museum for a cool fall 1.5 mile hike. \nWard Pound Ridge Reservation sprawls across 4\,700 acres of countryside\, making it the largest park in Westchester County. Its landscape offers a diverse terrain\, with everything from deep hollows to towering ridges reaching heights of up to 800 feet. \nWithin the reservation\, you’ll encounter a rich variety of natural features\, including hemlock gorges\, dry uplands\, wetlands\, ponds\, and two winding rivers. Connecting these natural wonders are 35 miles of scenic trails\, allowing visitors to wander through meadows\, marshes\, and vernal pools. \nWe will meet outside the Trailside Nature Museum at 9:30am. \nPlease enter the park through the main entrance (no parking fee required) at Route 121 just south of Route 35\, and drive to the museum. It is located in the middle of the reservation on the south side of Reservation Road\, and parking is located nearby. DESCRIPTION:Join the Nature & Sustainability Club to explore the tastes and beautiful grounds of the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture.  Through farm-to-table foods\, and an Innovation Labs Explore Tour\, we will both learn about and experience sustainable local farming.  Blue Hill at Stone Barns is a renowned farm-to-table restaurant that is part of the Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture\, a nonprofit farm and educational center.  (Please note: we will not be dining at Blue Hill. We will be dining at the Cafeteria. More information below.) \nPlease also note that the timing of this event will depend on Stone Barns’ availability. DESCRIPTION:On September 19\, dive into the beauty of fall through the eyes of abstract art. \nLearn to mix vibrant\, warm autumn hues and create an abstract painting inspired by the landscape of the Northeast in the Fall…. apple orchards\, pumpkin patches\, rustic barns\, reservoirs with a backdrop of patchwork mountains\, dirt roads freckled with colorful leaves. \nWorkshop includes a canvas. Participants will also be given a palette knife and paintbrush to continue their color mixing journeys at home or back in their studios. \nBring your own inspirational photo or choose from one on hand to get you in the joyful mood of using fall color palettes and nature’s inspiration to create warm earthy abstract art. \nLight refreshments\, wine and non-alcoholic beverages will be served. \n  \nAbout Tricia Caracappa:  \nTricia Caracappa is an artist and designer living in Katonah\, New York. Tricia received a BS in Systems Science Physics from Providence College\, with a strong focus in Studio Art. After declining a masters of architecture program\, she began a full career in financial services and continued to study at the Art Students League of New York. \nAfter two decades in corporate\, she listened to her internal creative compass and received an AAS in Interior Design from Parsons School of Design\, while working full time and raising a family. She retired from corporate and launched her interior design business. \nShortly after she was asked a pivotal question\, “If you were in a room filled with opportunities and success were guaranteed\, what would you?” Her answer and action were immediate\,” ARTIST.” Today she follows what absolutely lights her up – making beautiful\, energetic art that reminds her to live life fully with ease and delight\, joy and peace\, not pressure or stress. \nHer art studio is in tucked into the 19th century brick lined Yellow Monkey Village in Cross River\, New York. Nature\, movement\, color and beauty inform her curiosity\, play and flow in the studio where she finds freedom in the abstract and grounding in form. \nTricia is on the board of the Katonah Museum Artists’ Association\, has exhibited in various group shows\, including Life Perceived\, Opposing Forces and Rhyme\, Rhythm and Harmony\, participated in local events such as Larchmont Art on the Avenues\, and had her first solo show at Yellow Studio Gallery in October 2023. Its landscape offers a diverse terrain\, with everything from deep hollows to towering ridges reaching heights of up to 800 feet. \nWithin the reservation\, you’ll encounter a rich variety of natural features\, including hemlock gorges\, dry uplands\, wetlands\, ponds\, and two winding rivers. Connecting these natural wonders are 35 miles of scenic trails\, allowing visitors to wander through meadows\, marshes\, and vernal pools. \nWe will meet at the Kimberly Bridge picnic area. \nPlease enter the park through the main entrance at Route 121 just south of Route 35\, and drive to the Kimberly Bridge picnic area.  It is the very last parking area in the park\, so you have not gone too far\, keep going! Once you drive over the river\, parking is on your left. \nA map for location details and parking lot information will be emailed to the hikers in advance of the hike. DESCRIPTION:Looking to connect with nature and other liked-minded Yellow Studio women? Then join the Nature & Sustainability Club for an early evening hike followed by a happy hour on June 18. \nWe’ll be heading to Westmoreland Sanctuary in Mt. Kisco for a scenic and serene hike\, followed by drinks at Village Social. \nWestmoreland Sanctuary is a cherished not-for-profit nature center and wildlife preserve\, spanning the towns of Bedford\, Mt. Kisco and Armonk. Encompassing 669 acres\, Westmoreland is a sanctuary for both nature enthusiasts and wildlife alike. The 8.5 miles of hiking trails wind through diverse ecosystems where visitors are invited to explore and immerse themselves in the beauty of the natural world. We will enjoy an approximately hour long hike\, including Bechtel Lake\, which has benches and a dock for observing wildlife. \nWe will meet at the Westmoreland Park Natural Science Museum at 5:30pm.   \nPlease park at the main entrance\, located at: \n260 Chestnut Ridge Road \nMount Kisco\, NY 10549 \n  \nAfter our hike we will all travel to Village Social for a post hike happy hour. \n  \nVillage Social \n251 East Main Street \nMount Kisco\, NY 10549 \n  \nA map for location details and parking lot information will be emailed to the hikers in advance of the hike.
