SUMMARY:Book Club: The Order of Things by Sarah Gormley
DESCRIPTION:New book alert! The Order of Things will be released on September 10…you can pre-order your book on Amazon here. \nJoin us for Book Club at Yellow Studio on Tuesday October 1 at 6:30pm. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members. This is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard (and we will have a very special guest via Zoom…the author herself\, Sarah Gormley!) \nLight refreshments will be available. \nAbout the book: \nWhat happens when a marketing executive leaves San Francisco to care for her dying mother on their family farm in Ohio? A Hallmark heroine would fall in love with her high school sweetheart during a snowstorm-but this is no Hallmark movie. Sarah Gormley spent most of her life trying to outrun the persistent self-loathing that plagued her from childhood\, convinced that self-worth was something she had to earn by doing rather than being. When she returned to Salt Creek Farm at age forty-five\, Gormley had no idea that detaching from the success she believed defined her\, untangling the complicated relationship with her mother\, and continuing the hard work of therapy would lead to a wildly transformed life. Told with exceptional candor and humor\, The Order of Things is a story about how one woman learned to let go of the patterns of her past to create a future she never imagined. Ultimately\, Gormley’s book is about hope\, with a powerful message that will inspire you to think about the possibility of change in your own life. \nAbout Sarah Gormley: \nSarah Gormley owns a contemporary art gallery\, Sarah Gormley Gallery (SGG)\, in Columbus\, Ohio that operates from the belief that original art can be a source of joy for everyone. She opened the gallery in 2019\, 25 years after her grandmother gifted Sarah with her first piece of art when she graduated from DePauw University. Sarah’s undergraduate degree reinforced an early love for literature and writing\, with a heavy sprinkling of the liberal arts fairy dust that teaches you how to think\, analyze and articulate a clear point of view. \nThat foundation was rounded out by concentrations in marketing and operations at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. Her marketing career included both agency work and in-house roles with global brands including IMAX\, Martha Stewart\, Girl Scouts of the USA and Adobe. Sarah was honored as one of 2015’s Forty Women to Watch Over 40\, a list that celebrates women who are upending the perception that 40 is past your prime. She has also been featured in Forbes and The CMO Club. \nIn June of 2019\, Gormley was selected to speak at her 25th class reunion at DePauw University. After she spoke\, a woman Sarah had never met approached her and said\, “You should write a book.” Turns out that woman was celebrated author Meg Kissinger\, a fact Sarah learned only after she asked Meg if she might consider offering a praise quote for The Order of Things – because life is just funny that way.

Participants will also be given a palette knife and paintbrush to continue their color mixing journeys at home or back in their studios. \nBring your own inspirational photo or choose from one on hand to get you in the joyful mood of using fall color palettes and nature’s inspiration to create warm earthy abstract art. \nLight refreshments\, wine and non-alcoholic beverages will be served. \n  \nAbout Tricia Caracappa:  \nTricia Caracappa is an artist and designer living in Katonah\, New York. Raised by a mother who stroked melodies on the piano and stitched intricate quilts\, and a father who sculpted with clay\, glass\, and paint\, Rebecca was surrounded by artistic inspiration. This rich environment fueled her own artistic passion\, leading her to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. \nAfter graduation\, Rebecca dedicated herself to the non-profit sector\, developing art programs for children and training teachers. This hands-on work\, coupled with the joy of sharing her passion with curious young minds\, invigorated her artistic explorations. As a mother of three\, she continued to nurture her creative spirit through various endeavors\, including children’s book illustration and running her own piano studio. \nHer students’ creativity inspired Rebecca to further her education\, studying composition and digital music production at Juilliard’s Evening Division. This blend of music and visual arts culminated in her project\, 52songsforu\, where she created original music paired with self-shot videos. \nToday\, Rebecca’s artwork is a testament to her lifelong journey of creative exploration. Her paintings uniquely weave textures and blend different styles\, often incorporating freestyle elements with linear mappings.

SUMMARY:Book Club: The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict & Victoria Christopher Murray
DESCRIPTION:Let’s discuss The Personal Librarian – bring questions\, comments and connect with other Yellow Studio Members over this fascinating read. Hosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard. \nBaked goods by 351 Bakery will be served. \nThis book and many more will be available for purchase from Picture Book at the Yellow Studio Summer Market on Sunday June 23 from 11am to 4pm. Order your book here and select Yellow Studio as the pickup location. Books can be picked up at the Summer Market or after.  \nDESCRIPTION\nA remarkable novel about J. P. Morgan’s personal librarian\, Belle da Costa Greene\, the Black American woman who was forced to hide her true identity and pass as white in order to leave a lasting legacy that enriched our nation\, from New York Times bestselling authors Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray. \nIn her twenties\, Belle da Costa Greene is hired by J. P. Morgan to curate a collection of rare manuscripts\, books\, and artwork for his newly built Pierpont Morgan Library. Belle becomes a fixture in New York City society and one of the most powerful people in the art and book world\, known for her impeccable taste and shrewd negotiating for critical works as she helps create a world-class collection. \nBut Belle has a secret\, one she must protect at all costs. She was born not Belle da Costa Greene but Belle Marion Greener. She is the daughter of Richard Greener\, the first Black graduate of Harvard and a well-known advocate for equality. Belle’s complexion isn’t dark because of her alleged Portuguese heritage that lets her pass as white–her complexion is dark because she is African American. \nThe Personal Librarian tells the story of an extraordinary woman\, famous for her intellect\, style\, and wit\, and shares the lengths she must go to–for the protection of her family and her legacy–to preserve her carefully crafted white identity in the racist world in which she lives. \nABOUT THE AUTHORS\nMarie Benedict is a lawyer with more than ten years’ experience as a litigator. A graduate of Boston College and the Boston University School of Law\, she is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Only Woman in the Room\, The Mystery of Mrs. Christie\, Carnegie’s Maid\, The Other Einstein\, and Lady Clementine. All have been translated into multiple languages. She lives in Pittsburgh with her family. \nVictoria Christopher Murray is an acclaimed author with more than one million books in print. She has written more than twenty novels\, including Stand Your Ground\, an NAACP Image Award Winner for Outstanding Fiction and a Library Journal Best Book of the Year. She holds an MBA from the NYU Stern School of Business. \n

SUMMARY:Upstate Art Weekend featuring Natural Tendencies at Yellow Studio
DESCRIPTION:Yellow Studio is thrilled to be an official participant in Upstate Art Weekend. \nNatural Tendencies\, featuring work by Tomoko Abe\, Natale Adgnot\, Allison Belolan and Christy Sheppard Knell\, is an exploration of human inclinations and how they inform our interactions with nature. Through glass\, fabric\, projection\, ink\, beeswax\, thermoplastic\, horsehair and beyond\, these artists explore the relationship between humanity and nature\, the tension between transience and permanency and the ubiquity of bias\, both conscious and unconscious. Experimenting with unusual materials and allowing them to dictate what takes form serves as a reminder to distinguish between what is designed and what is destined\, and to strike a balance between the two. \nUPSTATE ART WEEKEND (UPAW) is a connective annual event\, for residents and tourists alike\, celebrating the cultural vibrancy of Upstate New York. The fifth edition of UPAW will take place Thursday\, July 18\, through Sunday\, July 21\, 2024\, spanning ten counties in the Catskills Mountains and Hudson Valley.\nUPAW launched in 2020 with 23 participants\, expanding to over 140 this year\, welcoming thousands of visitors to the region. The participants are comprised of local arts organizations\, galleries\, museums\, residencies and creative projects\, mixed with temporary exhibitions and events staged especially for UPAW.\nUPAW compiles a program of events and a comprehensive google map\, which garnered 320k+ views for the 2023 edition and continues to be used as a resource to discover the arts Upstate.\nUPAW has been featured in The New York Times\, artnet news\, The Art Newspaper\, Hyperallergic\, Chronogram\, Cool Hunting and Whitewall\, among others. \nUPSTATE ART WEEKEND was founded by Helen Toomer (STONELEAF RETREAT) and is powered by SPACE design + productions.

SUMMARY:Nature & Sustainability Club: Evening Hike and Potluck Picnic in Ward Pound Ridge
DESCRIPTION:Looking to connect with nature and other liked-minded Yellow Studio women? Join the Nature & Sustainability Club for a scenic hike followed by a riverside Potluck Picnic on July 9 at 5:30pm.  \nWe’ll be heading to Ward Pound Ridge for a group hike\, from Kimberly Bridge\, a beautiful picnic area and trailhead overlooking Cross River (the river for which the town is named!).  Feel free to bring along your favorite picnic goods to share with the group. No need to worry about carrying them along the hike – we’ll have a cooler waiting in one of our cars to keep everything fresh and convenient.   \nWard Pound Ridge Reservation sprawls across 4\,700 acres of countryside\, making it the largest park in Westchester County. Its landscape offers a diverse terrain\, with everything from deep hollows to towering ridges reaching heights of up to 800 feet. \nWithin the reservation\, you’ll encounter a rich variety of natural features\, including hemlock gorges\, dry uplands\, wetlands\, ponds\, and two winding rivers. Connecting these natural wonders are 35 miles of scenic trails\, allowing visitors to wander through meadows\, marshes\, and vernal pools. \nWe will meet at the Kimberly Bridge picnic area. \nPlease enter the park through the main entrance at Route 121 just south of Route 35\, and drive to the Kimberly Bridge picnic area.  It is the very last parking area in the park\, so you have not gone too far\, keep going! Once you drive over the river\, parking is on your left. \nA map for location details and parking lot information will be emailed to the hikers in advance of the hike. We look forward to enjoying the surrounding beauty with each of you. \nFor Yellow Studio Members. Please RSVP. \nHosted by Sarah Ehrlich & Taleen Mena
