SUMMARY:Artists Talk: Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Hear from Stacey Burgay\, Meghan Larimer\, Susan Lerner\, Orit Mardkha-Tenzer\, Carol Paik and Amy Putman about their creative  process\, inspiration and artistic journeys. \nAll are welcome. Please RSVP. \nPerspectives is a vibrant showcase of the unique voices and artistic approaches of each New York Collage Ensemble (NYCE) founding member. Susan Lerner’s vintage-inspired hand-cut works transport us to a bygone era of nostalgia and storytelling\, while Isabelle Milkoff’s frenetic\, chaotic rhythms and Carol Paik’s eco-conscious textile art provide a compelling commentary on the world around us. Amy Putman’s socially conscious mixed media works and Orit Mardkha-Tenzer’s spontaneous improvisational photo transfers complete this dynamic group of artists. \nABOUT THE NEW YORK COLLAGE ENSEMBLE \nNYCE was established to create a supportive community of collage artists who can provide connection\, collaboration\, and inspiration for one another. The seven founding members have exhibited their work as a collective in international and domestic shows\, and they are thrilled to bring their unique perspectives to the Gallery at Yellow Studio.

SUMMARY:Art Club: Excursion to MoMA
DESCRIPTION:All Members welcome! Join us for an excursion to MoMA in NYC on Friday May 31. \nWe will start our visit by viewing Joan Jonas: Good Night Good Morning followed by lunch in the museum and then time to explore the permanent collection. \nPlease RSVP below. \nEmail Tina tina@yellowstudiony.com to reserve a seat in her car. This car will depart YS at 9am. If a second car is needed\, we can revisit the plan. Members are also welcome to take Metro North and meet at the museum at 10:30am. \nAt least one car will depart NYC at 2:30pm and return to YS. \nAbout the Exhibition:  \n“I didn’t see a major difference between a poem\, a sculpture\, a film\, or a dance\,” Joan Jonas has said. For more than five decades\, Jonas’s multidisciplinary work has bridged and redefined boundaries between performance\, video\, drawing\, sculpture\, and installation. The most comprehensive retrospective of the artist’s work in the United States\, Joan Jonas: Good Night Good Morning traces the full breadth of her career\, from works that explore the encounter between performance and technology to recent installations about ecology and the landscape. \nJonas began her decades-long career in New York’s vibrant Downtown art scene of the 1960s and ’70s\, where she was one of the first artists to work in performance and video. Drawing influence from literature\, Noh and Kabuki theater\, and art history\, her early experimental works probed how a given element—be it distance\, mirrors\, the camera\, or even wind—could transform one’s perception. \nJoan Jonas: Good Night Good Morning presents drawings\, photographs\, notebooks\, oral histories\, film screenings\, performances\, and a selection of the artist’s installations. Jonas continues to produce her most urgent work through immersive multimedia installations that address climate change and kinship between species. “Despite my interest in history\,” she has said\, “my work always takes place in the present.” \nOrganized by Ana Janevski\, Curator\, with Lilia Rocio Taboada and Gee Wesley\, Curatorial Assistants\, Department of Media and Performance. With thanks to Mitchell Herrmann\, Mellon-Marron Research Consortium Fellow\, and Molly Superfine\, Brandon Eng\, and Piper Marshall\, former Mellon-Marron Research Consortium Fellows\, Department of Media and Performance. \nMore information about the exhibition here. \n  \n*This will be our June Art Club meetup.

SUMMARY:Book Club: Anita de Monte Laughs Last by Xochitl Gonzalez
DESCRIPTION:Our next book club meeting is on Wednesday May 22 at 6:30pm. We will be discussing Anita de Monte Laughs Last by Xochitl Gonzalez. \nThe book is available to purchase from Picture Book for pick up at Yellow Studio. You can purchase the book here and select Yellow Studio as the pick up location. Audiobook listeners can purchase the book from Libro here. \nBook Club is hosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard.\nSnacks and beverages will be served. \nYellow Studio’s Book Club is for Members. Member RSVP below. \nNot a Member yet and curious about joining? Click here or email tina@yellowstudiony.com with any questions about Membership. \nDESCRIPTION\nNew York Times bestselling author Xochitl Gonzalez delivers a mesmerizing novel about a first-generation Ivy League student who uncovers the genius work of a female artist decades after her suspicious death. \n1985. Anita de Monte\, a rising star in the art world\, is found dead in New York City; her tragic death is the talk of the town. Until it isn’t. By 1998 Anita’s name has been all but forgotten–certainly by the time Raquel\, a third-year art history student is preparing her final thesis. On College Hill\, surrounded by privileged students whose futures are already paved out for them\, Raquel feels like an outsider. Students of color\, like her\, are the minority there\, and the pressure to work twice as hard for the same opportunities is no secret. \nBut when Raquel becomes romantically involved with a well-connected older art student\, she finds herself unexpectedly rising up the social ranks. As she attempts to straddle both worlds\, she stumbles upon Anita’s story\, raising questions about the dynamics of her own relationship\, which eerily mirrors that of the forgotten artist. \nMoving back and forth through time and told from the perspectives of both women\, Anita de Monte Laughs Last is a propulsive\, witty examination of power\, love\, and art\, daring to ask who gets to be remembered and who is left behind in the rarefied world of the elite. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nXochitl Gonzalez is the New York Times bestselling author of Olga Dies Dreaming. Named a Best Book of 2022 by The New York Times\, TIME\, Kirkus\, Washington Post\, and NPR\, Olga Dies Dreaming was the winner of the Brooklyn Public Library Book Prize in Fiction and the New York City Book Award. Gonzalez is a 2021 MFA graduate from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Her nonfiction work has been published in Elle Decor\, Allure\, Vogue\, Real Simple\, and The Cut. She is a staff writer for The Atlantic\, where her work has been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. A native Brooklynite and proud public school graduate\, Gonzalez holds a BA from Brown University and lives in her hometown of Brooklyn with her dog\, Hectah Lavoe. \nREVIEWS \nA Most Anticipated Book of 2024: TIME\, The Washington Post\, Refinery 29\, Real Simple\, Entertainment Weekly\, LA Daily News\, LitHub\, The Millions\, TODAY.com\, HipLatina\, Book Riot\, Kirkus\, and more! \n“Incandescent.” —Publishers Weekly \n“Part campus novel\, part ghost story\, Xochitl Gonzalez’s second novel fearlessly takes on racism and misogyny in the rarefied world of fine art and art history… Anita de Monte Laughs Last boldly questions the choices behind what we are taught and demands that the complete story be disclosed.” –BookPage \n“Funny\, piercing\, and full of moxie\, Anita de Monte Laughs Last is unsparing in its assessment of what goes on behind the castle walls\, the price people pay to be accepted into those hallowed halls\, and what it takes to liberate oneself from the dangers that lurk within. Really\, what Xochitl Gonzalez has written is an affirmation for anyone who’s ever had to ‘work twice as hard to get half as much.’ Anita de Monte Laughs Last is rollicking\, melodic\, tender\, and true. And oh so very wise.” —Robert Jones\, Jr.\, author of The Prophets\, a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction.

SUMMARY:The Founder Series: Gia Miller\, Co-Founder\, Editor-in-Chief and Co-Publisher\, Connect to Northern Westchester Magazine
DESCRIPTION:Join us for The Founder Series\, an inspiring and empowering talk series where we shine a spotlight on the remarkable stories of four local women who have forged their paths in the entrepreneurial landscape of our community. This engaging series is designed to celebrate the achievements\, resilience and innovation of local women founders who have defied norms and continue to navigate challenges to build successful ventures. \n\n\n\nAbout Gia Miller \n\n\n\nGia is an award-winning journalist\, the editor-in-chief/co-publisher of Connect to Northern Westchester magazine and the co-owner of Sonder Publishing. Raised in New Orleans\, she went “north” for college\, earning a magazine journalism degree from the University of Georgia before continuing north to the Big Apple. She worked at O\, The Oprah Magazine and ELLE Décor before temporarily switching paths to PR (not her thing\, but she learned a lot). After birthing her two children\, she became a freelance journalist and found her mojo. \n\n\n\nGia has written for countless national publications\, ranging from SELF and The Washington Post to Healthline and Parents\, mainly covering health & medicine\, mental health and parenting. As is often the case these days\, Gia’s current gig began as a pandemic project with her business partner-in-crime\, Justin Negard (the creative director and other co-publisher & co-owner)\, which organically grew into a publishing business. Despite her very specific degree\, Gia never dreamed of starting her own magazine or publishing business\, but she doesn’t regret the decision. \n\n\n\nIn her current role as editor-in-chief\, Gia has been instrumental in defining the magazine’s concept\, vision and voice in print\, online and throughout social media. As co-publisher\, she’s played an integral role in growing the print circulation from 15\,000 to over 21\,500 in under two years and implementing the magazine’s rebranding last November. And as co-owner\, she’s helped build a profitable business model that pushes the boundaries of local publishing in creative and original ways. \n\n\n\nWhen she’s not writing\, editing or strategizing world dominance\, Gia enjoys spending quality time with friends and family\, laughing at her crazy dog and listening to a good podcast. She thanks multiple alarms\, fermented grapes and her incredible husband (whose name is Marc\, NOT Justin) for helping her get through each day. Her love languages are food and humor. \n\n\n\nEach talk is limited to 20 attendees. \n\n\n\nWhat to expect at each talk: \n\n\n\nEach talk will feature a different local woman founder who will share her entrepreneurial journey. From the inception of the idea to navigating the complexities of business\, these women will provide a firsthand account of the highs\, lows and lessons learned. \n\n\n\nExplore the innovative approaches and unique perspectives that local women founders bring to the business world. Gain insights into how they have disrupted industries\, introduced fresh ideas and embraced creativity to build successful enterprises. \n\n\n\nHear stories of resilience and perseverance as our speakers discuss the challenges they faced and the strategies they employed to overcome them. From funding hurdles to breaking through gender biases\, these women have triumphed against the odds. \n\n\n\nEngage with the speakers through interactive Q&A sessions\, allowing attendees to delve deeper into the challenges\, triumphs\, and strategies shared by the women founders. This provides a unique opportunity for a direct exchange of knowledge and experiences. \n\n\n\nConnect with like-minded individuals\, aspiring entrepreneurs and established professionals in the local business community. The series will provide a platform for networking\, collaboration and the exchange of ideas\, fostering a supportive ecosystem for women in business. \n\n\n\nDelicious desserts from 351 Bakery will be served along with wine and other beverages. \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: \n\n\n\nSocial & All Access Member: $20 \n\n\n\nCommunity Member: $22.50 \n\n\n\nNon-Member: $25 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOther talks in the series: \n\n\n\nAbout Lizzie Agnew\, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Modern Citizen / Thursday\, March 7 at 6:30pm \n\n\n\nLizzie is Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Modern Citizen\, a fashion brand with an elevated point of view and thoughtful price point. \n\n\n\nAn Art History major\, Lizzie has always had an appreciation for how the aesthetic can bring meaning and joy to our lives. It was not a surprise that her first career working in Finance\, while helpful for her future in business\, did not last long. A few years later\, she attended Stanford Graduate School of Business to make a career pivot to fashion. \n\n\n\nIn 2015 Lizzie met her co-founder in San Francisco\, and they have since grown Modern Citizen online\, in stores\, and through wholesale partners like Saks and Rent the Runway. She still finds the daily connection to others through art and fashion to be deeply satisfying\, and she has been especially energized by Modern Citizen’s recent work to improve its impact on people and the planet. \n\n\n\nLizzie recently moved to Bedford\, New York where she lives with her husband and two small children. \n\n\n\nAbout Anne Mayhew\, Founder and Head Baker\, LMNOP Bakery / Thursday\, March 21 at 6:30pm \n\n\n\nAnne began with studies in art\, earning an MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, and continuing to work professionally at various Broadway millinery shops as well as the Metropolitan Opera. Bread baking started as a hobby in the off-hours\, and quickly became an addictive craft. Soon there were more loaves being made than Anne’s family could eat. Sharing fresh sourdough bread with friends\, family and neighbors\, was the beginning of LMNOP. During the pandemic demand soared\, and the time came to take the leap and build a bakery. \n\n\n\nLMNOP Bakery opened its doors at 25 Katonah Avenue in October of 2023. Staff has grown from 1 (in 2017) to 25 in 2024. LMNOP produces daily a robust menu of pastries\, sandwiches\, breads\, and drinks. LMNOP strives to serve our local community\, to make excellent innovative baked goods made from organic and sustainably grown whole grains. \n\n\n\nAbout Inge Brouard Brown\, Founder\, Katonah Museum of Art / Thursday May 9\, at 6:30pm \n\n\n\nInge was born and has lived most of her life in Katonah. She attended Skidmore College where she was an Art major. Inge is an artist\, weaver\, designer\, mother\, and founder of the Katonah Museum of Art. Her first rug was purchased by a trustee of the Museum of Modern Art. Her careers have taken her in interesting\, but always artistic directions\, including as a designer for a British textile designer and for Georg Jensen\, a more than 100-year-old lifestyle products company. She also started her own Christmas card business. \n\n\n\nIn 1953\, lnge approached the Katonah Library to ask for the use of the upstairs attic room to display art. That was the beginning of the Katonah Gallery. With the help of five other couples\, including Jack Bauer\, who became the Director of the Whitney\, the new Gallery was launched in 1954 with the mission of mounting a flexible exhibition program of quality art and with the belief that art should be a part of residents’ everyday lives. The group of founders curated the exhibitions\, painted the walls\, hung the art\, and tended to all the details that come with maintaining a tiny museum\, all in the spirit of volunteerism.   \n\n\n\nlnge became the first President of the Gallery and was pivotal through its early years of dynamic growth. She was involved in almost every aspect of mounting an exhibition\, including graphic designer. From the very beginning\, lnge was dedicated to education and involving area schools. In 1969\, after raising funds to build an extension\, the Katonah Gallery was able to move to the street-level of the town library. lnge remained a critical force\, “encouraging volunteers to be more professional than the professionals” with the unselfish intent of demanding high standards for the Gallery. For family reasons\, lnge moved to the Midwest in the late 70s. Fortunately for the community\, she returned to Katonah and is a proud member of the Museum she was instrumental in founding. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Through some 160 works of painting\, sculpture\, photography\, film\, and ephemera\, it will explore the comprehensive and far-reaching ways in which Black artists portrayed everyday modern life in the new Black cities that took shape in the 1920s–40s in New York City’s Harlem and nationwide in the early decades of the Great Migration when millions of African Americans began to move away from the segregated rural South. The first art museum survey of the subject in New York City since 1987\, the exhibition will establish the Harlem Renaissance and its radically new development of the modern Black subject as central to the development of international modern art. \n\n\n\nFeatured artists include Charles Alston\, Aaron Douglas\, Meta Warrick Fuller\, William H. Johnson\, Archibald Motley\, Winold Reiss\, Augusta Savage\, James Van Der Zee\, and Laura Wheeler Waring. These artists will be shown in direct juxtaposition with portrayals of international African diasporan subjects by European counterparts ranging from Henri Matisse\, Edvard Munch\, and Pablo Picasso to Germaine Casse\, Jacob Epstein\, and Ronald Moody.” \n\n\n\nFeatured artwork: Mother and Daughter by Laura Wheeler Waring\, ca. 1927
