SUMMARY:Book Club: The Man Who Could Move Clouds by Ingrid Rojas Contreras
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Tuesday January 28 at 6:30pm to discuss The Man Who Could Move Clouds by Ingrid Rojas Contreras. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members. This is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \nLight refreshments will be available. \nRSVP required. \nThis book is available for purchase at Bedford Books. Only a few copies left! \nLocation: \nBedford Books\n13 Court Road\nBedford\, NY 10506 \n  \nAbout the book: \n\n\nPULITZER PRIZE FINALIST • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • From the bestselling author of Fruit of the Drunken Tree\, comes a dazzling\, kaleidoscopic memoir reclaiming her family’s otherworldly legacy. A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: TIME\, NPR\, VULTURE\, PEOPLE\, BOSTON GLOBE\, VANITY FAIR\, ESQUIRE\, & MORE. “Rojas Contreras reacquaints herself with her family’s past\, weaving their stories with personal narrative\, unraveling legacies of violence\, machismo and colonialism… In the process\, she has written a spellbinding and genre-defying ancestral history.”—New York Times Book Review For Ingrid Rojas Contreras\, magic runs in the family. Raised amid the political violence of 1980s and ’90s Colombia\, in a house bustling with her mother’s fortune-telling clients\, she was a hard child to surprise. Her maternal grandfather\, Nono\, was a renowned curandero\, a community healer gifted with what the family called “the secrets”: the power to talk to the dead\, tell the future\, treat the sick\, and move the clouds. And as the first woman to inherit “the secrets\,” Rojas Contreras’ mother was just as powerful. Mami delighted in her ability to appear in two places at once\, and she could cast out even the most persistent spirits with nothing more than a glass of water. This legacy had always felt like it belonged to her mother and grandfather\, until\, while living in the U.S. in her twenties\, Rojas Contreras suffered a head injury that left her with amnesia. As she regained partial memory\, her family was excited to tell her that this had happened before: Decades ago Mami had taken a fall that left her with amnesia\, too. And when she recovered\, she had gained access to “the secrets.”In 2012\, spurred by a shared dream among Mami and her sisters\, and her own powerful urge to relearn her family history in the aftermath of her memory loss\, Rojas Contreras joins her mother on a journey to Colombia to disinter Nono’s remains. With Mami as her unpredictable\, stubborn\, and often amusing guide\, Rojas Contreras traces her lineage back to her Indigenous and Spanish roots\, uncovering the violent and rigid colonial narrative that would eventually break her mestizo family into two camps: those who believe “the secrets” are a gift\, and those who are convinced they are a curse.Interweaving family stories more enchanting than those in any novel\, resurrected Colombian history\, and her own deeply personal reckonings with the bounds of reality\, Rojas Contreras writes her way through the incomprehensible and into her inheritance. The result is a luminous testament to the power of storytelling as a healing art and an invitation to embrace the extraordinary.\n\n\n\nAbout Ingrid Rojas Contreras: \nIngrid Rojas Contreras was born and raised in Bogotá\, Colombia. Her first novel Fruit of the Drunken Tree was the silver medal winner in First Fiction from the California Book Awards\, and a New York Times editor’s choice. Her essays and short stories have appeared in the New York Times Magazine\, The Believer\, and Zyzzyva\, among others. She lives in California.

SUMMARY:Opening: Lost and Found featuring Carol Bouyoucos and Tina Scepanovic
DESCRIPTION:The Gallery at Yellow Studio presents “Lost and Found\,” a dynamic two-person exhibition featuring artists Carol Bouyoucos and Tina Scepanovic. On view February 15 to March 14\, this thoughtfully curated show explores the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and technological innovation\, as the artists move in opposite yet complementary directions; one mining the richness of historical techniques\, the other pioneering new digital territories. Join us for an opening reception on Saturday February 22 from 4 to 6pm. \nThrough this compelling pairing\, Scepanovic resurrects traditional processes and forgotten materials\, working with centuries-old water gilding techniques and transforming vintage glass to create contemporary meaning from the past. In contrast\, Bouyoucos pushes into future realms through post-photographic explorations\, employing artificial intelligence and digital tools to reshape our visual understanding of the natural world. Together\, their works demonstrate how contemporary art can simultaneously honor historical methods while embracing emerging technologies\, creating a rich dialogue between what is lost to time and what is found through innovation. \nView a selection of artwork images from the exhibition here. \nAll are welcome at the opening reception. RSVPs strongly encouraged.  \n  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nCarol Bouyoucos is a contemporary American artist exploring the intersection between nature and technology. Her digital photographic works evoke the romanticism and nostalgia of nineteenth-century painting\, though created with distinctly 21st-century tools. Based at Meadowside Cottage at the Marsh Sanctuary in Mount Kisco\, NY\, Bouyoucos has exhibited her work internationally and is actively involved in local art communities\, museums\, and the Bedford Garden Club. She holds a BFA from The University of Michigan’s School of Art and Design. For more information\, visit her website here.  \nTina Scepanovic is a Chinese American artist known for innovative fusion of historical techniques with contemporary design. Drawing from her background in furniture restoration\, she transforms vintage materials and employs traditional processes like Renaissance-era water gilding in her sculptures and installations. Trained at the Isabel O’Neil Studio in NYC and under master gilder Charles Douglas\, Scepanovic’s work has been exhibited at prestigious venues including Salon Art + Design and The Painting Center\, featured in the New York Times\, and collected internationally. For more information\, visit her website here.  \n

SUMMARY:Book Club: Sweet Fury by Sash Bischoff
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Tuesday February 25 at 6:30pm to discuss Sweet Fury by Sash Bischoff. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members. This is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nAnnouncement! We will have a very special guest at Book Club\, the author herself: Sash Bischoff!  \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \nLight refreshments will be available. \nYS Member RSVP required. \nThis book is available for purchase at Bedford Books.  \nLocation: \nBedford Books\n13 Court Road\nBedford\, NY 10506 \n  \nAbout the book: \n\n\nWhen a beloved actress is cast in a feminist adaptation of a Fitzgerald classic\, she finds herself the victim in a deadly game of revenge in which everyone\, on screen and off\, is playing a part. \n“Cunningly ambitious\, twisty\, and immersive\, it seduces you into a story so compelling that you aren’t ready for the sucker-punch of its deeper truths. This is a hell of a debut.” —Rebecca Makkai\n\n\nLila Crayne is America’s sweetheart: she’s generous and kind\, gorgeous and magnetic. She and her fiancé\, visionary filmmaker Kurt Royall\, have settled into a stunning new West Village apartment and are set to begin filming their feminist adaptation of Fitzgerald’s Tender Is the Night.\n\n\nTo prepare for the leading role\, Lila begins working with charming and accomplished therapist Jonah Gabriel to dig into the trauma of her past. Soon\, Lila’s impeccably manicured life begins to unravel on the therapy couch—and Jonah is just the man to pick up the pieces. But everyone has a secret\, and no one is quite who they seem.\n\n\nA twisty\, thought-provoking novel of construction and deconstruction in conversation with the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald and told through the lens of the film industry\, Sweet Fury is an incisive and bold critique of America’s deep-rooted misogyny. With this novel\, Bischoff examines the narratives we tell ourselves\, and what happens when we co-opt others into those stories; and she probes the blurred lines between victim and perpetrator and the true meaning of justice.\n  \n\n\n\nAbout the Author: \nSash Bischoff is a writer and theater director. She has written plays that have been developed at theaters throughout the US. As a director\, she has worked on Broadway and off. Broadway/National Tours include Dear Evan Hansen\, The Visit\, On the Town\, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying\, and Shrek. Sash grew up as an actor and won the National Arts Award (NFAA) for Acting. She currently lives in New York with her husband and their many pets. Sweet Fury is her first novel.

SUMMARY:Lost and Found Artists' Talk: Carol Bouyoucos and Tina Scepanovic
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday March 8 at 2pm to learn more about the artistic practices\, process\, influences and more of Carol Bouyoucos and Tina Scepanovic. \n  \nAbout the Exhibition \nThe Gallery at Yellow Studio presents “Lost and Found\,” a dynamic two-person exhibition featuring artists Carol Bouyoucos and Tina Scepanovic. On view February 15 to March 14\, this thoughtfully curated show explores the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and technological innovation\, as the artists move in opposite yet complementary directions; one mining the richness of historical techniques\, the other pioneering new digital territories. \nView and purchase artwork from the exhibition here. From the Collections dropdown menu please select “Lost and Found.” \n  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nCarol Bouyoucos is a contemporary American artist exploring the intersection between nature and technology. Learn more at carolgreenanbouyoucos.com. Learn more at tinascepanovic.com. \n  \nAll are welcome. Please RSVP.

SUMMARY:Opening: From Within featuring Rebecca Rivard
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening of Rebecca Rivard’s solo show\, From Within\, on Saturday March 22 from 4 to 6pm. \nPlease RSVP below. All are welcome.  \nView a selection of artwork images from the exhibition here.\n \n\nView and purchase artwork from the exhibition here. From the Collections dropdown menu please select “From Within.”\n \n\nABOUT THE EXHIBITION \nThe Gallery at Yellow Studio presents “From Within\,” a compelling solo exhibition by mixed-media artist Rebecca Rivard. Running March 22 through April 18\, 2025\, this intimate showcase explores themes of transformation and self-discovery through works that peel back layers to reveal the profound beauty of our inner worlds.  \nIn this evocative body of work\, Rivard masterfully navigates the terrain between external expression and internal reflection. Drawing inspiration from nature’s rhythms and patterns\, she builds richly textured surfaces through multiple layers of acrylic paint and precise linework on various substrates including wood panels and paper that pulse with inner vitality. Like geological formations that hold the story of time within their strata\, her works reveal the accumulated wisdom of experience\, inviting viewers to discover the profound beauty beneath surface appearances and connect with their path of personal evolution. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nRebecca Rivard creates richly layered mixed-media compositions inspired by nature’s rhythms\, exploring the relationship between sound\, texture\, and visual storytelling. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (BFA)\, she further developed her practice through studies in digital music production and composition at Juilliard’s Evening Division. Her signature project\, “52songsforu\,” exemplifies her interdisciplinary approach\, combining original musical compositions with video art. Rivard’s work\, influenced by her deep involvement with the Yellow Studio community\, investigates themes of transformation and self-discovery. Her work has been recognized with an award from Carriage Barn Arts Center\, and exhibitions at Bethany Arts Center\, The Gallery at Yellow Studio\, and the Bedford Art Crawl. An active leader in Westchester’s artistic community\, Rivard serves on the Katonah Museum Artists’ Association board and is a core member of Yellow Studio\, where she creates and collaborates. SUMMARY:Book Club: Self-Portrait with Nothing by Aimee Pokwatka
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Tuesday March 25 at 6:30pm to discuss Self-Portrait with Nothing by Aimee Pokwatka\, current Yellow Studio Author-in-Residence. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members…and the author herself! That’s right\, Aimee will be joining us in-person for Book Club. \nThis is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \nLight refreshments will be available. \nMember RSVP required. \nThis book is sold out at Bedford Books! But you can purchase the book online here and have it shipped to you.  \n  \nAbout the Book \nOrphan Black meets Fringe in a story that reminds us that living our best life sometimes means embracing the imperfect one we already have. \n“Fraught and deeply moving…the work of a genuinely exciting new talent.” —Booker Prize winner\, George Saunders. \n“Aimee Pokwatka’s Self-Portrait with Nothing is tantalizing and elusive lacework\, delicately balanced between the branches of fantasy\, mystery and realism like a spider’s web.” —The New York Times\n\nIf a picture paints a thousand worlds . . . \nAbandoned as an infant on the local veterinarian’s front porch\, Pepper Rafferty was raised by two loving mothers\, and now\, at thirty-six is married to the stable\, supportive Ike. She’s never told anyone that at fifteen she discovered the identity of her biological mother. \nThat’s because her birth mother is Ula Frost\, a reclusive painter famous for the outrageous claims that her portraits summon their subjects’ doppelgängers from parallel universes. \nResearching the rumors\, Pepper couldn’t help but wonder: Is there a parallel universe in which she is more confident\, more accomplished\, better able to accept love? \nA universe in which Ula decided she was worth keeping? \nA universe in which Ula’s rejection didn’t still hurt too much to share? \nCombining a thrilling pan-continental race against time with an authentic and touching personal drama\, Self-Portrait with Nothing is an unforgettable debut that explores what it means to be part of a family. \nAbout the Author \nAimee Pokwatka grew up in Wheeling\, West Virginia. She studied anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro\, and received her MFA in creative writing from Syracuse University. Her debut novel\, Self-Portrait with Nothing was published in 2022 to wide acclaim. Her work has been published in Fairy Tale Review\, Outlook Springs\, Hunger Mountain\, and elsewhere. She lives in New York with her family. \n  \nLocation: \nBedford Books \n13 Court Rd \nBedford\, NY 10506

Raised in a home where artistry was encouraged\, she was immersed in a world where expression had no boundaries. This rich foundation led her to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst\, where she honed her skills and began defining her artistic voice. \nThroughout her career\, Rebecca has embraced a variety of creative roles. She has developed a wide array of arts programs for children\, led hands on workshops for teachers\, and shared her passion for music with countless piano students through her teaching studio. These diverse experiences have enriched her understanding of the interplay between art\, music\, and human connection\, shaping the multifaceted artist she is today. \nRebecca finds profound meaning in the act of revealing her inner world through art. Much of her time is spent in quiet reflection\, often in the company of nature\, where she draws inspiration from the intricate beauty and rhythms of the natural world. These moments provide a space to weave together memories\, experiences\, and observations into a rich tapestry of thoughts and ideas. This internal process inspired the rebranding of her online presence to Innerworkingart\, a name that underscores her commitment to making the internal visible—not just her own\, but as an invitation for others to pause and connect with their own inner worlds. \nAbout Tina Villaveces: \nTina Villaveces is a recent Brooklyn transplant who has dedicated the majority of her career to the arts.
