Through some 160 works of painting\, sculpture\, photography\, film\, and ephemera\, it will explore the comprehensive and far-reaching ways in which Black artists portrayed everyday modern life in the new Black cities that took shape in the 1920s–40s in New York City’s Harlem and nationwide in the early decades of the Great Migration when millions of African Americans began to move away from the segregated rural South. The first art museum survey of the subject in New York City since 1987\, the exhibition will establish the Harlem Renaissance and its radically new development of the modern Black subject as central to the development of international modern art. \n\n\n\nFeatured artists include Charles Alston\, Aaron Douglas\, Meta Warrick Fuller\, William H. Johnson\, Archibald Motley\, Winold Reiss\, Augusta Savage\, James Van Der Zee\, and Laura Wheeler Waring. These artists will be shown in direct juxtaposition with portrayals of international African diasporan subjects by European counterparts ranging from Henri Matisse\, Edvard Munch\, and Pablo Picasso to Germaine Casse\, Jacob Epstein\, and Ronald Moody.” \n\n\n\nFeatured artwork: Mother and Daughter by Laura Wheeler Waring\, ca. 1927

SUMMARY:Book Club: The Vulnerables by Sigrid Nunez
DESCRIPTION:Our next book club meeting is on Monday\, March 25\, 2024 at 6:30pm. We will be discussing The Vulnerables by Sigrid Nunez. The book is available to purchase at Yellow Studio through Picture Book. You can purchase the book here and select Yellow Studio as the pick up location. \n\n\n\nBook Club is hosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \n\n\n\nSnacks and beverages will be served. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDESCRIPTION\n\n\n\nThe New York Times-bestselling\, National Book Award-winning author of The Friend and What Are You Going Through brings her singular voice to a story about modern life and connection \n\n\n\n“An ode to our basic need to connect with other beings\, be they human or animal\, even in a global crisis that told us to stay apart.” —NPR \n\n\n\nElegy plus comedy is the only way to express how we live in the world today\, says a character in Sigrid Nunez’s ninth novel. The Vulnerables offers a meditation on our contemporary era\, as a solitary female narrator asks what it means to be alive at this complex moment in history and considers how our present reality affects the way a person looks back on her past. \n\n\n\nHumor\, to be sure\, is a priceless refuge. Equally vital is connection with others\, who here include an adrift member of Gen Z and a spirited parrot named Eureka. The Vulnerables reveals what happens when strangers are willing to open their hearts to each other and how far even small acts of caring can go to ease another’s distress. A search for understanding about some of the most critical matters of our time\, Nunez’s new novel is also an inquiry into the nature and purpose of writing itself. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\n\n\n\nSigrid Nunez is the author of the novels A Feather on the Breath of God\, The Last of Her Kind\, The Friend\, and What Are You Going Through\, among others. She is also the author of Sempre Susan: A Memoir of Susan Sontag. She has been the recipient of several awards\, including the National Book Award\, the Rome Prize in Literature\, and a Guggenheim. Her books have been translated into thirty languages. She lives in New York City. \n\n\n\nREVIEWS\n\n\n\n“I am committed\, until one of us dies\, to Nunez’s novels. I find them ideal. They are short\, wise\, provocative\, funny — good and strong company.” —Dwight Garner\, New York Times

SUMMARY:The Founder Series: Anne Mayhew\, Founder and Head Baker\, LMNOP Bakery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for The Founder Series\, an inspiring and empowering talk series where we shine a spotlight on the remarkable stories of four local women who have forged their paths in the entrepreneurial landscape of our community. This engaging series is designed to celebrate the achievements\, resilience and innovation of local women founders who have defied norms and continue to navigate challenges to build successful ventures. \n\n\n\nAbout Anne Mayhew \n\n\n\nAnne began with studies in art\, earning an MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, and continuing to work professionally at various Broadway millinery shops as well as the Metropolitan Opera. Bread baking started as a hobby in the off-hours\, and quickly became an addictive craft. Soon there were more loaves being made than Anne’s family could eat. Sharing fresh sourdough bread with friends\, family and neighbors\, was the beginning of LMNOP. During the pandemic demand soared\, and the time came to take the leap and build a bakery. \n\n\n\nLMNOP Bakery opened its doors at 25 Katonah Avenue in October of 2023. Staff has grown from 1 (in 2017) to 25 in 2024. LMNOP produces daily a robust menu of pastries\, sandwiches\, breads\, and drinks. LMNOP strives to serve our local community\, to make excellent innovative baked goods made from organic and sustainably grown whole grains. \n\n\n\nEach talk is limited to 20 attendees. \n\n\n\nWhat to expect at each talk: \n\n\n\nEach talk will feature a different local woman founder who will share her entrepreneurial journey. From the inception of the idea to navigating the complexities of business\, these women will provide a firsthand account of the highs\, lows and lessons learned. \n\n\n\nExplore the innovative approaches and unique perspectives that local women founders bring to the business world. Gain insights into how they have disrupted industries\, introduced fresh ideas and embraced creativity to build successful enterprises. \n\n\n\nHear stories of resilience and perseverance as our speakers discuss the challenges they faced and the strategies they employed to overcome them. From funding hurdles to breaking through gender biases\, these women have triumphed against the odds. \n\n\n\nEngage with the speakers through interactive Q&A sessions\, allowing attendees to delve deeper into the challenges\, triumphs\, and strategies shared by the women founders. This provides a unique opportunity for a direct exchange of knowledge and experiences. \n\n\n\nConnect with like-minded individuals\, aspiring entrepreneurs and established professionals in the local business community. The series will provide a platform for networking\, collaboration and the exchange of ideas\, fostering a supportive ecosystem for women in business. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDelicious baked goods from LMNOP Bakery will be served along with wine and other beverages. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOther talks in the series: \n\n\n\nAbout Lizzie Agnew\, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Modern Citizen / Thursday\, March 7 at 6:30pm \n\n\n\nLizzie is Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Modern Citizen\, a fashion brand with an elevated point of view and thoughtful price point. \n\n\n\nAn Art History major\, Lizzie has always had an appreciation for how the aesthetic can bring meaning and joy to our lives. It was not a surprise that her first career working in Finance\, while helpful for her future in business\, did not last long. A few years later\, she attended Stanford Graduate School of Business to make a career pivot to fashion. \n\n\n\nIn 2015 Lizzie met her co-founder in San Francisco\, and they have since grown Modern Citizen online\, in stores\, and through wholesale partners like Saks and Rent the Runway. She still finds the daily connection to others through art and fashion to be deeply satisfying\, and she has been especially energized by Modern Citizen’s recent work to improve its impact on people and the planet. \n\n\n\nLizzie recently moved to Bedford\, New York where she lives with her husband and two small children. \n\n\n\nAbout Gia Miller\, Co-Founder\, Editor-in-Chief and Co-Publisher\, Connect to Northern Westchester magazine / Thursday\, April 25 at 6:30pm \n\n\n\nGia is an award-winning journalist\, the editor-in-chief/co-publisher of Connect to Northern Westchester magazine and the co-owner of Sonder Publishing. Raised in New Orleans\, she went “north” for college\, earning a magazine journalism degree from the University of Georgia before continuing north to the Big Apple. She worked at O\, The Oprah Magazine and ELLE Décor before temporarily switching paths to PR (not her thing\, but she learned a lot). After birthing her two children\, she became a freelance journalist and found her mojo. \n\n\n\nGia has written for countless national publications\, ranging from SELF and The Washington Post to Healthline and Parents\, mainly covering health & medicine\, mental health and parenting. As is often the case these days\, Gia’s current gig began as a pandemic project with her business partner-in-crime\, Justin Negard (the creative director and other co-publisher & co-owner)\, which organically grew into a publishing business. Despite her very specific degree\, Gia never dreamed of starting her own magazine or publishing business\, but she doesn’t regret the decision. \n\n\n\nIn her current role as editor-in-chief\, Gia has been instrumental in defining the magazine’s concept\, vision and voice in print\, online and throughout social media. As co-publisher\, she’s played an integral role in growing the print circulation from 15\,000 to over 21\,500 in under two years and implementing the magazine’s rebranding last November. And as co-owner\, she’s helped build a profitable business model that pushes the boundaries of local publishing in creative and original ways. \n\n\n\nWhen she’s not writing\, editing or strategizing world dominance\, Gia enjoys spending quality time with friends and family\, laughing at her crazy dog and listening to a good podcast. She thanks multiple alarms\, fermented grapes and her incredible husband (whose name is Marc\, NOT Justin) for helping her get through each day. Her love languages are food and humor. \n\n\n\nAbout Inge Brouard Brown\, Founder\, Katonah Museum of Art / Thursday May 9\, at 6:30pm \n\n\n\nInge was born and has lived most of her life in Katonah. She attended Skidmore College where she was an Art major. Inge is an artist\, weaver\, designer\, mother\, and founder of the Katonah Museum of Art. Her first rug was purchased by a trustee of the Museum of Modern Art. Her careers have taken her in interesting\, but always artistic directions\, including as a designer for a British textile designer and for Georg Jensen\, a more than 100-year-old lifestyle products company. She also started her own Christmas card business. \n\n\n\nIn 1953\, lnge approached the Katonah Library to ask for the use of the upstairs attic room to display art. That was the beginning of the Katonah Gallery. With the help of five other couples\, including Jack Bauer\, who became the Director of the Whitney\, the new Gallery was launched in 1954 with the mission of mounting a flexible exhibition program of quality art and with the belief that art should be a part of residents’ everyday lives. The group of founders curated the exhibitions\, painted the walls\, hung the art\, and tended to all the details that come with maintaining a tiny museum\, all in the spirit of volunteerism.   \n\n\n\nlnge became the first President of the Gallery and was pivotal through its early years of dynamic growth. She was involved in almost every aspect of mounting an exhibition\, including graphic designer. From the very beginning\, lnge was dedicated to education and involving area schools. In 1969\, after raising funds to build an extension\, the Katonah Gallery was able to move to the street-level of the town library. lnge remained a critical force\, “encouraging volunteers to be more professional than the professionals” with the unselfish intent of demanding high standards for the Gallery. For family reasons\, lnge moved to the Midwest in the late 70s. Fortunately for the community\, she returned to Katonah and is a proud member of the Museum she was instrumental in founding.

SUMMARY:The Founder Series: Lizzie Agnew\, Co-Founder and Co-CEO\, Modern Citizen
\n\n\n\nAbout Lizzie Agnew \n\n\n\nLizzie is Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Modern Citizen\, a fashion brand with an elevated point of view and thoughtful price point. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDelicious desserts by 351 Bakery will be served along with wine and other beverages. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOther talks in the series: \n\n\n\nAbout Anne Mayhew\, Founder and Head Baker\, LMNOP Bakery / Thursday\, March 21 at 6:30pm \n\n\n\nAnne began with studies in art\, earning an MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, and continuing to work professionally at various Broadway millinery shops as well as the Metropolitan Opera.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of Defining Values & Micro-Pivot Planning at Yellow Studio on March 5th at 7pm. \n\n\n\nAfter an incredibly successful Career Pivot Panel in January\, we’d like to invite Yellow Studio Members to a Networking Club event that will dive into defining [business or personal] values as a way of making micro-pivots towards joy and alignment.  \n\n\n\nWe loved hearing the stories our panelists had to share\, while recognizing that not everyone is ready (interested or able) to leave a job or career. The good news is\, that’s not the only way to make a pivot.  \n\n\n\nThe Yellow Studio Networking Club is a collective of women navigating life collaboratively\, supporting each other as we move towards alignment – personally and professionally. \n\n\n\nThis event is for Yellow Studio Members only. \n\n\n\nStay tuned for events that are open to the wider community\, or learn about Membership options here. \n\n\n\nHosted by Lauren Schwarzfeld and Jess Watts

SUMMARY:Artists Talk: Allyson Montana\, Kelly Duffield\, Rita Maas and Randy Matusow
DESCRIPTION:Join us on February 8 at 6:30pm to learn about the artistic journeys\, inspiration\, lessons learned and beyond from 4 KMAA Artists whose work is featured in FACETS: Allyson Montana\, Kelly Duffield\, Rita Maas and Randy Matusow. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome. Please RSVP. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout the Artists \n\n\n\nAllyson Montana is a painter and mixed media artist working in the New York City area. Allyson’s work explores unwritten stories from the archaeological past. The content of Allyson’s art plays with the metaphor of interpretation\, narrative\, and authorship. Allyson’s background in art history\, ancient history\, and East Asian languages greatly informs her work. She has participated in Fulbright fellowships to study art history in Japan\, India\, and Sri Lanka\, as well as fellowships in Korea\, Taiwan\, and China. Allyson teaches drawing and painting at Teachers College\, Columbia University where she is a doctoral candidate and fellow. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nKelly Duffield‘s practice is centered on examining complexities and vulnerabilities within identity and self. Kelly’s work meditates on the interplay of parent\, child\, children\, spouse\, pets\, possessions\, work and home\, finding a narrative that is often strange\, surreal and sufficiently ambiguous to evoke the viewer’s imagined or projected meanings. In her more recent work\, reminiscent of the historical movements of minimalism and abstract expressionism\, she explores color\, repetition and the grid. She can’t help but add secret messages with torn pages of a poetry book or intricately cut collage pieces\, contrasting the controlled geometry and calling into question the meanings of these pieces. \n\n\n\nKelly holds a BFA and a BA in art history from Oklahoma State University. She went on to practice corporate law and lived in Colorado for more than 20 years. Kelly started painting again in 2017 after a nearly 25 year hiatus. By 2018\, she had her first solo show and has now participated in numerous one-person and group exhibitions in Colorado\, California and New York. Her most recent solo exhibition was with and she is represented by Themes + Projects\, Minnesota Street Project (San Francisco\, CA). Duffield now lives and works full-time as an artist in New York. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRita Maas is a visual artist working with photography\, drawing and printmaking to playfully construct conceptual based imagery. Working within predetermined systems she embraces elements of chance and disorder. How information is received\, filtered and retained are persistent themes of her practice. \n\n\n\nBorn in New York\, Rita received her BFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts. She laterearned her MFA in Visual Arts at Lesley University College of Art and Design. Rita Maas is a 2023 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow in Printmaking/ Drawing / Book Arts. She recently served as the 2022 Frances Niederer Artist-in-Residence at Hollins University in Roanoke\, VA that coincided with a solo exhibition at the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum. Maas was named a Finalist in The Print Center’s 95th Annual in 2020 and was included in the exhibit “Fit to Print” there. Her work was Finalist in the Rhonda Wilson Award and shown in the Annual FRESH 2019 exhibition at KlompChing Gallery\, Brooklyn\, NY. \n\n\n\nHer work has been included in numerous exhibits throughout the area included those held at the Katonah Museum of Art\, KinoSaito Art Center in Verplank\, NY\, the Hammond Museum and Japanese Garden in North Salem\, MAPSpace in Port Chester\, NY and Five Points Arts in Torrington\, CT. Maas currently lives and works in the Somers\, NY. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRandy Matusow\, a New York based photographer\, focuses her eye on human interactions. From her street photography to her recent diptychs of landscapes paired with family photos\, Randy unwraps the complexities of relationships. \n\n\n\nRandy is widely exhibited. Her photographs are in the permanent collection at The Brooklyn Museum\, and numerous private collections. She was a Fulbright finalist and is the recipient of the Women’s Research and Development Fund Grant from The City University of New York. Her photographs have been published in Aperture Magazine\, The Family of Women\, and Amherst Review. \n\n\n\nMatusow\, an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Photography at the City College of New York for over twenty years\, holds an MFA from Brooklyn College and a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design.

We as artists so often work in solitude but there is such beauty in community and opening ourselves up. This Critique Night will be a pressure free\, supportive space to share ideas and get inspired. It’s completely ok if you don’t have anything concrete to bring for this gathering. You can also bring a question or issue related to art or art business that you would like the group to help with. We will continue to have opportunities throughout the new year to have informal critiques or feedback on all things art and art business\, so please come if this idea intrigues you and you would like to take part. \n\n\n\nAs always there will be a hands-on activity\, this time with clay\, while we collectively enjoy each other’s works and support each other on our artful journeys. \n\n\n\nCome share where you are. Open to artists of all skill levels and art lovers alike. \n\n\n\nSnacks and beverages will be provided. \n\n\n\nFree. Open to all Yellow Studio Members. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNot a Member\, but curious about joining? Find more information and join here.

SUMMARY:Book Club - How to Say Babylon: A Memoir by Safiya Sinclair
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \n\n\n\nWe took a vote at our last book club meetup and the selected book is…How to Say Babylon: A Memoir by Safiya Sinclair. \n\n\n\nJoin us on Tuesday January 23 at 6:30pm for an engaging exploration of identity\, history and the power of storytelling. \n\n\n\nThis book will be available for purchase from Picture Book at the Holiday Market at Yellow Studio on Saturday November 18 from 10am to 4pm. \n\n\n\nLight refreshments will be served at the book club meetup. \n\n\n\nMember RSVP below. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout the Book \n\n\n\nWith echoes of Educated and Born a Crime\, How to Say Babylon is the stunning story of the author’s struggle to break free of her rigid Rastafarian upbringing\, ruled by her father’s strict patriarchal views and repressive control of her childhood\, to find her own voice as a woman and poet. \n\n\n\nThroughout her childhood\, Safiya Sinclair’s father\, a volatile reggae musician and militant adherent to a strict sect of Rastafari\, became obsessed with her purity\, in particular\, with the threat of what Rastas call Babylon\, the immoral and corrupting influences of the Western world outside their home. He worried that womanhood would make Safiya and her sisters morally weak and impure\, and believed a woman’s highest virtue was her obedience. \n\n\n\nIn an effort to keep Babylon outside the gate\, he forbade almost everything. In place of pants\, the women in her family were made to wear long skirts and dresses to cover their arms and legs\, head wraps to cover their hair\, no make-up\, no jewelry\, no opinions\, no friends. Safiya’s mother\, while loyal to her father\, nonetheless gave Safiya and her siblings the gift of books\, including poetry\, to which Safiya latched on for dear life. And as Safiya watched her mother struggle voicelessly for years under housework and the rigidity of her father’s beliefs\, she increasingly used her education as a sharp tool with which to find her voice and break free. Inevitably\, with her rebellion comes clashes with her father\, whose rage and paranoia explodes in increasing violence. As Safiya’s voice grows\, lyrically and poetically\, a collision course is set between them. \n\n\n\nHow to Say Babylon is Sinclair’s reckoning with the culture that initially nourished but ultimately sought to silence her; it is her reckoning with patriarchy and tradition\, and the legacy of colonialism in Jamaica. Rich in lyricism and language only a poet could evoke\, How to Say Babylon is both a universal story of a woman finding her own power and a unique glimpse into a rarefied world we may know how to name\, Rastafari\, but one we know little about. \n\n\n\nAbout the Author \n\n\n\nSafiya Sinclair was born and raised in Montego Bay\, Jamaica. She is the author of the poetry collection Cannibal\, winner of a Whiting Writers’ Award\, the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Metcalf Award in Literature\, the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Poetry\, and the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry. Cannibal was selected as one of the American Library Association’s Notable Books of the Year\, was a finalist for the PEN Center USA Literary Award and the Seamus Heaney First Book Award in the UK\, and was longlisted for the PEN Open Book Award and the Dylan Thomas Prize.
