SUMMARY:Book Club - How to Say Babylon: A Memoir by Safiya Sinclair
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \n\n\n\nWe took a vote at our last book club meetup and the selected book is…How to Say Babylon: A Memoir by Safiya Sinclair. \n\n\n\nJoin us on Tuesday January 23 at 6:30pm for an engaging exploration of identity\, history and the power of storytelling. \n\n\n\nThis book will be available for purchase from Picture Book at the Holiday Market at Yellow Studio on Saturday November 18 from 10am to 4pm. \n\n\n\nLight refreshments will be served at the book club meetup. \n\n\n\nMember RSVP below. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout the Book \n\n\n\nWith echoes of Educated and Born a Crime\, How to Say Babylon is the stunning story of the author’s struggle to break free of her rigid Rastafarian upbringing\, ruled by her father’s strict patriarchal views and repressive control of her childhood\, to find her own voice as a woman and poet. \n\n\n\nThroughout her childhood\, Safiya Sinclair’s father\, a volatile reggae musician and militant adherent to a strict sect of Rastafari\, became obsessed with her purity\, in particular\, with the threat of what Rastas call Babylon\, the immoral and corrupting influences of the Western world outside their home. He worried that womanhood would make Safiya and her sisters morally weak and impure\, and believed a woman’s highest virtue was her obedience. \n\n\n\nIn an effort to keep Babylon outside the gate\, he forbade almost everything. In place of pants\, the women in her family were made to wear long skirts and dresses to cover their arms and legs\, head wraps to cover their hair\, no make-up\, no jewelry\, no opinions\, no friends. Safiya’s mother\, while loyal to her father\, nonetheless gave Safiya and her siblings the gift of books\, including poetry\, to which Safiya latched on for dear life. And as Safiya watched her mother struggle voicelessly for years under housework and the rigidity of her father’s beliefs\, she increasingly used her education as a sharp tool with which to find her voice and break free. Inevitably\, with her rebellion comes clashes with her father\, whose rage and paranoia explodes in increasing violence. As Safiya’s voice grows\, lyrically and poetically\, a collision course is set between them. \n\n\n\nHow to Say Babylon is Sinclair’s reckoning with the culture that initially nourished but ultimately sought to silence her; it is her reckoning with patriarchy and tradition\, and the legacy of colonialism in Jamaica. Rich in lyricism and language only a poet could evoke\, How to Say Babylon is both a universal story of a woman finding her own power and a unique glimpse into a rarefied world we may know how to name\, Rastafari\, but one we know little about. \n\n\n\nAbout the Author \n\n\n\nSafiya Sinclair was born and raised in Montego Bay\, Jamaica. She is the author of the poetry collection Cannibal\, winner of a Whiting Writers’ Award\, the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Metcalf Award in Literature\, the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Poetry\, and the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry. Cannibal was selected as one of the American Library Association’s Notable Books of the Year\, was a finalist for the PEN Center USA Literary Award and the Seamus Heaney First Book Award in the UK\, and was longlisted for the PEN Open Book Award and the Dylan Thomas Prize.

SUMMARY:Collage and Painting Workshop with Kelly Duffield
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Kelly Duffield for a workshop that puts your imagination to the test. In this experimental session\, you will create artwork using gouache and collage. Gouache is a water-based paint used to paint opaque\, matte surfaces. You will creatively merge painting with archival collage techniques to make narrative artworks on paper. Experimentation will be encouraged with an emphasis on the use of collage as a tool for composition\, as well as for finding the narrative. The workshop is designed for beginners as well as more experienced artists who want to explore with collage and painting (and learn archival collage technique). \n\n\n\nAll materials will be provided\, but participants are encouraged to bring collage materials (printed materials\, like magazines and catalogues\, textiles\, etc.).  \n\n\n\nThe first hour of this workshop will be instruction. Stay for an hour or two more to experiment with the materials and create an artwork. \n\n\n\nCoffee and light bites will be provided. \n\n\n\nLimited to 8 attendees. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Kelly Duffield \n\n\n\nShifting between works on paper and gouache paintings on linen\, Duffield examines complexities and vulnerabilities within homelife\, meditating on the domestic and the interplay of parent\, child\, children\, spouse\, pets\, possessions\, responsibilities and creativity. Please RSVP. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nArtist Statement \n\n\n\nI capture delight and cherish the journey when I stand in front of my canvas. Music is my muse and dance is my brushstroke. There is no hiding my joyful spirit – the art is my mirror. Intersecting brushstrokes and colors reflect my energy. Open to wonder\, I allow my curiosity to take me on an adventure where I find freedom in the abstract and inspiration in the everyday. I respond to marks and composition until I see and feel the balance and beauty that captures this delight. My art is an invitation to move up close with curiosity and step back with wide eyes\, exactly as I did. It is a gentle nudge\, encouraging viewers to chase what lights them up and see the boundless delightful possibilities within themselves. \n\n\n\nArtist Bio \n\n\n\nTricia Caracappa is an artist and designer who finds joy and journey in her abstract paintings. Growing up and currently living in Katonah\, New York\, she was introduced to the arts at a young age\, exploring every medium available from painting to pottery\, printmaking and dance. Tricia continued to study studio art focusing on figure drawing while she received a BS in Systems Science from Providence College. Tricia studied at the Art Students League of New York and received an AAS in Interior Design from Parsons School of Design while also building a twenty year career in global financial services. After retiring from Morgan Stanley\, Tricia began her design business and reignited her passion for painting. Tricia’s practice often carries her across media and subjects where she finds groundedness in form and freedom in the abstract. Her work reveals her love of color\, line and gesture. She believes that art is our daily reminder to choose joy and live in the present with ease and delight. In addition to Yellow Studio Gallery\, her work has been exhibited in numerous group shows and events in the tri-state area and is in private collections. Tricia currently serves on the board of the Katonah Museum Artists’ Association. Tricia’s studio is tucked into the 19th century brick lined Yellow Monkey Village in Cross River\, New York\, right next to where she completed her Yellow Studio Artist Residency. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTricia in her studio at Yellow Studio.

SUMMARY:Yellow Studio Book Club - How to Say Babylon: A Memoir by Safiya Sinclair
DESCRIPTION:Yellow Studio Book Club hosted by Fran Hauser and Emily Winograd Leonard \n\n\n\nOur next book club meetup will be on Tuesday January 23 at 6:30pm in the gallery at Yellow Studio. \n\n\n\nWe took a vote at our last book club meetup and the winner for the selected book is…How to Say Babylon: A Memoir by Safiya Sinclair. \n\n\n\nThis book will be available for purchase from Picture Book at the Holiday Market at Yellow Studio on Saturday November 18 from 10am to 4pm. \n\n\n\nLight refreshments will be provided at our book club meetup.

SUMMARY:Yellow Studio Networking Club
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to share the Networking Club at Yellow Studio! \n\n\n\nOld School networking was business focused and transactional and doesn’t serve everyone… so we’re going to change things up around here. The Networking Club at YS will be about connection\, collaboration and creation. We’ll host quarterly evening events (the first one is free) and 1-2 casual drop-in meet ups throughout the month. \n\n\n\nThis is for everyone! You don’t have to be in business\, you don’t have to have a traditional (or non-traditional) job\, you don’t have to be a parent\, you don’t have to be looking for “something more” or trying to figure out what’s next. This is a place to show up and meet people\, exactly as you are\, exactly where you are. \n\n\n\nOur first event on October 26th at 7:30pm is all about INTRODUCTIONS. Something we like to call The Get Curious Experience where we move beyond some of the standard\, boring questions of an introduction and start to normalize the questions that might actually let us know who we’re really talking to… and give us the opportunity to be ourselves. \n\n\n\nQuestions are a great way to understand who you’re talking to\, and to find some common ground. To be filled with curiosity and engage in conversations with thoughtful questions where answers are eagerly awaited. \n\n\n\nAnd also\, (as a whole\, as a society) we are usually terrible at it. \n\n\n\nWhen we see kids\, we often ask\, what do you want to be when you grow up? \n\n\n\nWhen we see high school students we often ask\, where do you want to go to college? \n\n\n\nWhen we see adults\, we often ask\, “what do you do?” \n\n\n\nIt’s easy\, it’s safe\, it feels like the thing you’re supposed to ask… \n\n\n\nBut we miss so much magic with these questions. \n\n\n\nWe miss so much humanness. \n\n\n\nWe have so much opportunity for connection through the questions we ask\, and for the most part\, we’re missing the moment.  \n\n\n\nThere is so much to learn and gain from one another\, but perhaps we need a little more practice normalizing some better greeting and introduction questions. \n\n\n\nAs we begin this new spin on an old concept\, we’ll start with this most basic of interactions\, and get curious about what networking and human connection could be like if we didn’t lead with our job titles\, accolades and degrees. \n\n\n\nThis is a free event for Yellow Studio Members. Please RSVP below. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout Lauren Schwarzfeld \n\n\n\nLauren Schwarzfeld\, best-selling author of Unboxed: Essays on Learning to Trust Myself So I Could Stop Doing the Things I Hate\, is a writer\, and coach whose work has also appeared online and in the best-selling anthology The Addiction Diaries. Lauren is endlessly curious\, a lover of books\, travel and new adventures. Lauren is the Director of Marketing + Publicity for Rise Books\, a publishing company dedicated to supporting emerging authors while bringing their radical works of inspiration to life. She works with authors and clients to share their stories in authentic and inspiring ways. As Lauren has spent the past 25 years navigating through various industries\, careers and jobs\, she’s realized that the most powerful part of a storied work history is the wide variety of human connection. These experiences have led her to prioritize “who we are” over “what we do”\, something she brings into every new interaction. Lauren lives in Mt. Kisco with her husband\, three children and two dogs. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout Jess Watts \n\n\n\nJessica Watts is a local real estate agent specializing in sustainability. As a real estate investor\, contractor’s daughter\, and former LEED AP (United States Green Building Council)\, Jess believes sustainability\, homes and community are directly linked and focuses on events that bring people together. Real Estate is more than homes\, it is people. Jess works to bring people together throughout the year\, and is excited to help grow a community where people can come as they are and connect with others. When she isn’t out and about\, she is nestled in her home in Pound Ridge with her husband\, son and 4 pups.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Tricia Caracappa: Possibilities
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday October 21 from 4 to 6pm to celebrate Tricia Caracappa and view the paintings in her solo exhibition\, Possibilities. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome. \n\n\n\nOur opening reception at Yellow Studio coincides with the Katonah Art Walk on October 21 from 3 to 7pm. We will be showing a selection of paintings by Tricia Caracappa at Our North during the Art Walk. Our North is located at 43 Katonah Avenue. \n\n\n\nArtist BioTricia Caracappa is an artist and designer who finds joy and journey in her abstract paintings.
