SUMMARY:Intro to Encaustic Photography Workshop with Rebecca Dunn
DESCRIPTION:This beginner’s Encaustic Photography Workshop is a great introduction if you have never worked with encaustic wax before or if you’ve worked with wax but haven’t tried incorporating photos into your work. \nDuring Rebecca Dunn‘s\, 2.5 hour\, hands on workshop\, each participant will have time to work on 3 of their own photographs that have been mounted to 5 x 7” wood panels.  The workshop will focus on prepping your photos properly\, layering the wax on\, adding color\, and techniques for making texture\, as well as where to find materials. \nAfter registering please email rebeccadunnart@gmail.com 3 photos you would like to work with\,  landscape photos are recommended\, the photos will be mounted onto a wood board ahead of time and be ready to work on for class.  If you do not have photos\, we can provide a few to choose from. \nAll supplies will be provided but please bring anything you may want to experiment with. \nWorkshop limited to 8 participants. 18+ \n \nRebecca Dunn’s Art \nMy work is deeply influenced by my love for fiction\, hiking to ruins\, painting\, and mushroom hunting—each of these passions fuels the magical\, whimsical quality that defines my art. As a child\, I often dreamed of stepping through portals into other worlds\, and as an adult\, I collect images of stone windows and mystical places to combine them into my own imagined portals. The encaustic medium\, with its ethereal quality and unpredictable nature\, adds a layer of magic to my work\, giving it a tactile\, sculptural feel. \nrebeccadunnart.com\nIG @rebeccadunnart

SUMMARY:Networking Club - Behind the Brand: Navigating the Direct-to-Consumer Landscape
DESCRIPTION:This community is made up of so many small businesses that we all love and adore – many that operate online and we can’t wait for them to host a pop-up or find them at a local fair or farmers market! \nOn Tuesday May 20 at 7pm\, we’re bringing some of those women together to give us a peek behind the curtain to understand what really goes into running an direct-to-consumer business – the unique challenges\, opportunities and exciting moments! \nAn engaging evening for entrepreneurs\, aspiring business owners or anyone from the community who supports these (or any) small business! \nThis event is free for Yellow Studio Members and $20 for non-members. \nSpace is limited to 30 attendees. Please register below. \n  \nPanelists: \nJennifer Sarkilahti from Odette New York \n\nOdette New York is a collection of sculptural jewelry by designer and founder Jennifer Sarkilahti. Each design is carefully carved by hand in wax before being cast into sustainable metals. Dedicated to experimentation within the craft\, Sarkilahti creates new limited editions each season in addition to a permanent collection of signature styles. \n\nRaised in Virginia\, Sarkilahti studied painting\, receiving her Master of Fine Arts from George Mason University before moving to New York City to pursue the arts. As an extension of her art practice\, she began working in lost wax\, blurring line between art and craft in creating the body of work that would eventually become Odette. \nIn 2019\, after 15 years of living and working in Brooklyn\, Sarkilahti moved to Bedford in the lower Hudson Valley\, where she currently designs out of her studio in a converted barn from the 1800s. \nMona Lipson from Miss Mona Makes Ice Cream \nMona Lipson is the founder of Miss Mona Makes Ice Cream\, a small-batch\, big-hearted ice cream venture rooted in community and purpose. Launched in Brooklyn in 2021 as a monthly subscription service during the pandemic called a “CST: Community Supported Treats.” (like a CSA but for something sweet!)\, the business has since evolved into a beloved local brand focused on online sales\, pop-ups\, and community events throughout Northern Westchester\, NY. \nKnown for inventive\, community-inspired flavors like With Love from Yellow Studio and Responsi-Bubble Pop\, Miss Mona Makes Ice Cream blends culinary creativity with social impact. Each pint tells a story\, featuring locally sourced ingredients for swirls and chunks\, inspiration from other small businesses\, and often benefiting causes close to Mona’s heart. \nNamed Best Treats of 2025 by Connect to Northern Westchester Magazine and featured in The New York Times by Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Jodi Kantor\, the brand celebrates nostalgia with a conscience. Mona’s mission is to use ice cream as a vehicle to unite neighbors\, strengthen communities\, and amplify voices through the power of ice cream. \nDrawing on 20+ years of experience in nonprofit leadership\, equity\, sustainability\, and mission-driven marketing\, Mona proves that dessert can be both delicious and deeply meaningful. \n  \nVanessa L. Seide from Very Lovely Soles \nEffortless style meets all-day comfort. Thoughtfully designed flats and sandals for women on the move. \nVanessa spent over 13 years at Nine West Group\, learning the ins and outs of the footwear industry—from sales and merchandising to design and sourcing. That’s also where she built the manufacturing relationships in Italy that she still uses today. \nAfter being laid off during the recession\, Vanessa took it as a sign to go out on her own. Vanessa has always been a flat and casual kind of girl— always searching for that perfect pair. A trip abroad sparked the idea\, and when she returned\, she launched Very Lovely Soles from her apartment in Westchester\, NY. \n\nWith the support of her Italian contacts\, she developed a comfortable\, contoured footbed that looks as good as it feels. Vanessa’s mission? To deliver high-quality\, chic flats at an accessible price—so you never have to choose between comfort and style. \nMegan Oliver from League of Friends \nMegan Oliver is the founder of League of Friends\, a joyful and mission-driven kids’ clothing brand dedicated to sustainability\, quality\, and clothes that truly keep up with childhood. \nWith over 15 years of experience in the fashion industry\, Megan began her journey studying apparel design before going on to work with known brands such as Cynthia Rowley\, Tommy Hilfiger\, and DKNY. Through these roles\, she cultivated a deep appreciation for craftsmanship\, practicality\, and design that lasts. \nLeague of Friends was born during Megan’s maternity leave with her first daughter\, sparked by a simple frustration: she couldn’t find kids’ clothing that checked all the boxes—well-made\, ethically produced\, playful\, and affordable. That gap led to a bigger idea and a growing brand. \nOriginally launched in Brooklyn and now based in Goldens Bridge\, New York—where she’s lived with her husband and two daughters for nearly three years—Megan leads League of Friends with a clear vision: to make everyday favorites that are worn on repeat\, hold up to real-life messes and adventures\, and are designed to be handed down again and again. \n\n  \nModerator \nJess Watts is a realtor\, sustainability maven\, and community hype girl. She has linked thriving small business communities to an increase in home value\, and truly believes that when the tide rises\, all boats float. She loves her sanctuary of Northern Westchester and can be found exploring local shops\, socializing\, enjoying time with family and being outside (when it isn’t freezing). She resides in Pound Ridge with her husband\, son and 3 dogs.

SUMMARY:Book Club: On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Tuesday May 27 at 6:30pm to discuss On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members. \nThis is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard \nLight refreshments will be available. \nMember RSVP required. \nThis book is available for purchase at Bedford Books! You can also purchase the book online here and have it shipped to you.  \n  \nAbout the Book \nA novel of remarkable depth and poignancy from one of the most acclaimed writers of our time. \nIt is July 1962. Florence is a talented musician who dreams of a career on the concert stage and of the perfect life she will create with Edward\, an earnest young history student at University College of London\, who unexpectedly wooed and won her heart. Newly married that morning\, both virgins\, Edward and Florence arrive at a hotel on the Dorset coast. At dinner in their rooms they struggle to suppress their worries about the wedding night to come. Edward\, eager for rapture\, frets over Florence’s response to his advances and nurses a private fear of failure\, while Florence’s anxieties run deeper: she is overcome by sheer disgust at the idea of physical contact\, but dreads disappointing her husband when they finally lie down together in the honeymoon suite. \nIan McEwan has caught with understanding and compassion the innocence of Edward and Florence at a time when marriage was presumed to be the outward sign of maturity and independence. On Chesil Beach is another masterwork from McEwan—a story of lives transformed by a gesture not made or a word not spoken. \n  \nAbout the Author \nIan McEwan studied at the University of Sussex\, where he received a BA degree in English Literature in 1970 and later received his MA degree in English Literature at the University of East Anglia. \nMcEwan’s works have earned him worldwide critical acclaim. He won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1976 for his first collection of short stories First Love\, Last Rites; the Whitbread Novel Award (1987) and the Prix Fémina Etranger (1993) for The Child in Time; and Germany’s Shakespeare Prize in 1999. He has been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize for Fiction numerous times\, winning the award for Amsterdam in 1998. His novel Atonement received the WH Smith Literary Award (2002)\, National Book Critics’ Circle Fiction Award (2003)\, Los Angeles Times Prize for Fiction (2003)\, and the Santiago Prize for the European Novel (2004). He was awarded a CBE in 2000. In 2006\, he won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his novel Saturday and his novel On Chesil Beach was named Galaxy Book of the Year at the 2008 British Book Awards where McEwan was also named Reader’s Digest Author of the Year. \nMcEwan lives in London. \n  \nLocation: \nBedford Books\n13 Court Rd\nBedford\, NY 10506

SUMMARY:Artists' Talk: You Will Return to You
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday May 31 at 2pm to learn more about the artistic practice\, process\, influences and more of Megan Cedro and Cameron Goodyear. \nAll are welcome. Please RSVP below.  \nAbout the Exhibition \nThe Gallery at Yellow Studio presents “You Will Return to You\,” an exhibition exploring themes of growth and reconnection through the works of artists Megan Cedro and Cameron Goodyear. Running April 26 through May 31\, 2025\, this thoughtfully paired show examines how women artists interpret the natural cycles of leaving and returning that shape our lives. Cedro’s expressive figures and Goodyear’s dreamlike landscapes offer complementary visions of this journey. \nThe exhibition creates a natural dialogue between Cedro’s haunting figures and Goodyear’s evocative botanical scenes. Cedro’s women emerge as powerful symbols of growth and self-discovery\, their penetrating gazes inviting viewers to recognize aspects of themselves they may have forgotten. Meanwhile\, Goodyear’s landscapes capture nature’s endless cycles of renewal\, using color and light to transform familiar settings into spaces where viewers can find their way back to essential truths. Their complementary approaches offer a rich exploration of coming full circle. Together\, these artists celebrate the profound ways women and nature embody the journey of departure and return. Together\, these artists invite viewers to witness the ever-changing relationships between humanity\, nature\, and our evolving understanding of both. \nView and purchase artwork from the exhibition here. SUMMARY:Book Club: That Bird Has My Wings by Jarvis Jay Masters
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club at Bedford Books on Monday June 23 at 6:30pm to discuss That Bird Has My Wings by Jarvis Jay Masters. \n  \nAbout the Book \nThe moving memoir of a Death Row inmate who discovers Buddhism and becomes an inspirational role model for fellow inmates\, guards\, and a growing public. \nIn 1990\, while serving a sentence in San Quentin for armed robbery\, Jarvis Jay Masters was implicated as an accessory in the murder of a prison guard. A 23-year-old Black man\, Jarvis was sentenced to death in the gas chamber. While in the maximum security section of Death Row\, using the only instrument available to him—a ball-point pen filler—Masters’s astounding memoir is a testament to the tenacity of the human spirit and the talent of a fine writer. \nOffering us scenes from his life that are at times poignant\, revelatory\, frightening\, soul-stirring\, painful\, funny and uplifting\, That Bird Has My Wings tells the story of the author’s childhood with parents addicted to heroin\, an abusive foster family\, a life of crime and imprisonment\, and the eventual embracing of Buddhism. Masters’s story drew the attention of luminaries in the world of American Buddhism\, including Pema Chodron\, who wrote a story about him for O Magazine and offers a foreword to the book. \nThirty-two years after his conviction\, Masters is still on Death Row. A growing movement of people believe Masters is innocent\, and are actively working within the legal system to free him. \n  \nAbout the Author \nAn inmate at San Quentin since the age of nineteen\, Jarvis Jay Masters is the author of Finding Freedom as well as many articles. In 1992\, Masters won a PEN Award for his poem “Recipe for Prison Pruno.” \nIn 1990\, Masters was moved to death row after being convicted of conspiracy in the murder of a prison guard. In April 2008\, the California Supreme Court ordered an evidentiary hearing based on the lack of substantial evidence for Masters’s conviction. Many people believe in Masters’s innocence and are actively working within the legal system to free him. \n  \nLocation: \nBedford Books\n13 Court Rd\nBedford\, NY 10506

Allison’s work has been featured in US galleries and art fairs\, including the 2024 Every Woman Biennial and Bruce Museum Fine Arts Fair. A Rhode Island School of Design graduate in Printmaking (2001)\, Allison later earned a Master’s in Teaching Art Education from the School of Visual Arts (2009). She taught art until 2019 and now creates from her Mamaroneck\, New York home studio. Allison collaborates with individual collectors\, curators\, and industry professionals on commissions\, wholesale\, and licensing projects. For more information\, visit www.allisonbelolan.com \nJulia Berkely \nJulia Berkeley is a painter based in Ridgefield\, CT. After earning her BA in Studio Art at Loyola University of Maryland\, she began working in fashion designing women’s prints and textiles at Ralph Lauren. This environment was enriching and thrilling watching her work come to fruition. What she loved most was working alongside creatives\, immersed in a visual world of storytelling. Julia now paints full time exhibiting in various group and solo shows in galleries\, art centers and storefronts. Her practice and application of art making have evolved over the years as she strives to create with purpose. Each environment\, experience\, relationship\, or encounter has a role in shifting Julia’s attention. \nGiselle Landers \nIn colorful\, expressive paintings of intertwining marks and shapes\, Giselle Landers explores applying structure to irregular forms. Giselle’s experience as a graphic designer deeply informs her practice. Embracing organic and figurative references\, Giselle’s art engages with action painting\, color field painting\, and graffiti without adhering to any singular artistic movement. Inspiration comes from a broad range of subjects: modernism\, hieroglyphics\, typography\, and ancient art; ultimately reflecting her own vocabulary of visual language. Giselle earned a BFA from Syracuse University and worked as a graphic designer in New York City for many years. In 2007 she moved to London with her husband and three young boys. While in London\, Giselle studied drawing and printmaking at The Royal Drawing School and earned a Graduate Diploma in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art. Giselle’s work has been exhibited in group shows in London\, New York and Connecticut. Recently\, Giselle completed a residency at Yellow Studio in Cross River\, NY where she focused on her love of palm trees and tropical flora. She is currently a board member of the Katonah Museum Artists’ Association. Giselle lives and works in Greenwich\, CT. \nJamie Cook Simon \nJamie Cook Simon (born 1976 in Washington D.C.) is a figurative and landscape painter working in oil\, acrylic\, ink and charcoal. With a love of color\, Jamie works to reflect her own experiences as an artist and mother and the deep emotions of the growth of these two identities. Jamie studied at Parsons School of Design\, the National Academy of Design in New York City from 2000-2004\, and UCLA from 2005-2009. After mentoring with the artist Joe Blaustein in Los Angeles\, Jamie continued to make her work while raising her four children. She happily moved back to the east coast in 2023. \n  \n
