SUMMARY:Art Club: Excursion to the Brooklyn Museum
DESCRIPTION:All Members welcome! Join us for an excursion to the Brooklyn Museum on Saturday July 6.\n\nWe will start our visit by viewing Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys followed by lunch in the museum and then time to explore the permanent collection.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease RSVP below. \nPlease book your ticket for the exhibition here. Please select 11am for the ticketed entry time.  \nEmail Tina tina@yellowstudiony.com to reserve a seat in her car. This car will depart YS at 9am. \nIf a second car is needed\, we can revisit the plan. Members are also welcome to take Metro North and meet at the museum at 10:45am. \nAt least one car will depart NYC at 2:30pm and return to YS. \n  \n\nAbout the Exhibition – Giants: The Dean Collection \n\n\n\nGordon Parks. Jean-Michel Basquiat. Lorna Simpson. Kehinde Wiley. Nina Chanel Abney. These names loom large in the past and present of art—as do many others in the collection of musical and cultural icons Swizz Beatz (Kasseem Dean) and Alicia Keys. Giants is the first major exhibition devoted to the couple’s world-class holdings of works by multigenerational Black diasporic artists. The Deans\, both born and raised in New York\, champion a philosophy of “Black artists supporting Black artists.” As Swizz Beatz told Cultured magazine\, “The collection started not just because we’re art lovers\, but also because there’s not enough people of color collecting artists of color.” \n“Giants” refers to several aspects of their collection: the renown of legendary artists\, the impact of canon-expanding contemporary artists\, and the monumental works by such creators as Derrick Adams\, Arthur Jafa\, and Meleko Mokgosi. Immense pieces—including the largest ever by Mokgosi—are paired with standouts such as Parks’s seminal photographs\, Wiley’s revolutionary portraits\, and Esther Mahlangu’s globe-bridging canvases. \nThe term also evokes the strength of the bonds between the Deans and the artists they support\, and among the artists themselves. Along with examining these links and legacies\, the exhibition will encourage “giant conversations” inspired by the works on view—critiquing society and celebrating Blackness. \nGiants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys is organized by Kimberli Gant\, Curator\, Modern and Contemporary Art\, with Indira A. Abiskaroon\, Curatorial Assistant\, Modern and Contemporary Art\, Brooklyn Museum. \nMore information about the exhibition here. \n\n\n\n

Join the Nature & Sustainability Club for a scenic hike followed by a riverside Potluck Picnic on July 9 at 5:30pm.  \nWe’ll be heading to Ward Pound Ridge for a group hike\, from Kimberly Bridge\, a beautiful picnic area and trailhead overlooking Cross River (the river for which the town is named!).  Feel free to bring along your favorite picnic goods to share with the group. No need to worry about carrying them along the hike – we’ll have a cooler waiting in one of our cars to keep everything fresh and convenient.   \nWard Pound Ridge Reservation sprawls across 4\,700 acres of countryside\, making it the largest park in Westchester County. Its landscape offers a diverse terrain\, with everything from deep hollows to towering ridges reaching heights of up to 800 feet. \nWithin the reservation\, you’ll encounter a rich variety of natural features\, including hemlock gorges\, dry uplands\, wetlands\, ponds\, and two winding rivers. Connecting these natural wonders are 35 miles of scenic trails\, allowing visitors to wander through meadows\, marshes\, and vernal pools. \nWe will meet at the Kimberly Bridge picnic area. \nPlease enter the park through the main entrance at Route 121 just south of Route 35\, and drive to the Kimberly Bridge picnic area.  It is the very last parking area in the park\, so you have not gone too far\, keep going! We look forward to enjoying the surrounding beauty with each of you. \nFor Yellow Studio Members. Please RSVP. \nHosted by Sarah Ehrlich & Taleen Mena

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Natural Tendencies featuring Tomoko Abe\, Natale Adgnot\, Allison Belolan & Christy Sheppard Knell
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the Artists and view their recent work featured in Natural Tendencies. \nNatural Tendencies\, featuring work by Tomoko Abe\, Natale Adgnot\, Allison Belolan and Christy Sheppard Knell\, is an exploration of human inclinations and how they inform our interactions with nature. Through glass\, fabric\, projection\, ink\, beeswax\, thermoplastic\, horsehair and beyond\, these artists explore the relationship between humanity and nature\, the tension between transience and permanency and the ubiquity of bias\, both conscious and unconscious. Experimenting with unusual materials and allowing them to dictate what takes form serves as a reminder to distinguish between what is designed and what is destined\, and to strike a balance between the two.

SUMMARY:Carve\, Print\, Repeat: Beginner Relief Printing Workshop with Allison Belolan during UPAW
DESCRIPTION:In this beginner-friendly workshop\, on Sunday July 21 as part of Upstate Art Weekend\, artist and printmaker Allison Belolan will introduce you to the expressive potential of relief printmaking using Soft-Kut blocks and safe-wash ink. \nNo prior experience is necessary—just bring a curious mind and willingness to experiment! Relief printmaking is one of the oldest printmaking techniques\, dating back to 8th-century China. This accessible method is popular for its simplicity\, versatility\, and ability to produce multiple copies of bold\, detailed images.  \nUnder Allison’s skilled instruction\, you’ll learn the fundamental relief printing techniques\, from transferring your designs to the block to inking and hand-printing on paper. You’ll also explore the versatility of water-based inks and the satisfying process of carving and editioning your own prints. \nAt the end of the workshop\, you’ll take home your carved Soft-Kut block and the tools to continue printing at home\, so you can keep “carving\, printing\, and repeating” long after the session is over. \n  \nThis paid workshop is open to anyone 18+ interested in learning about relief printmaking and is limited to 12 participants. \n  \nCome to the workshop with a 4×6 black and white sketch or drawing of your image. \nYour image should be on the simple side with no small details and no lettering. \n  \nDRESS FOR MESS! We will get messy\, so wear your best artmaking clothes! \n  \nMATERIALS PROVIDED: \n4×6 Soft-Kut printing block (yours to keep!) \nSafety Lino Cutter handle and blades (yours to keep!) \nBrayers \nBarrens \nPrintmaking paper \nNewsprint \n  \nOPTIONAL TO BRING: \nFolder/portfolio for prints \nPaper \n  \nTickets: \n  \nSocial\, All Access & Artist Member: $48 \nCommunity Member: $54 \nNon-Member: $60  \n  \nAbout Allison Belolan\n\nAllison draws inspiration from observing her environment and intuitively experimenting with repurposed and handcrafted materials for her signature mixed-media abstract landscapes. Her latest artwork features the addition of printmaking processes such as woodcut and intaglio techniques integrated into these mixed media works. Her work appears in art fairs and galleries throughout the United States\, including The Bruce Museum Fine Arts Fair where she won an award for artistic excellence.  Allison studied Printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design and graduated in 2001\, then worked as a jewelry designer until returning to school in 2009. SUMMARY:Book Club: The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict & Victoria Christopher Murray
DESCRIPTION:Let’s discuss The Personal Librarian – bring questions\, comments and connect with other Yellow Studio Members over this fascinating read. Hosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard. \nBaked goods by 351 Bakery will be served. \nThis book and many more will be available for purchase from Picture Book at the Yellow Studio Summer Market on Sunday June 23 from 11am to 4pm. Morgan’s personal librarian\, Belle da Costa Greene\, the Black American woman who was forced to hide her true identity and pass as white in order to leave a lasting legacy that enriched our nation\, from New York Times bestselling authors Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray. \nIn her twenties\, Belle da Costa Greene is hired by J. P. Morgan to curate a collection of rare manuscripts\, books\, and artwork for his newly built Pierpont Morgan Library. Belle becomes a fixture in New York City society and one of the most powerful people in the art and book world\, known for her impeccable taste and shrewd negotiating for critical works as she helps create a world-class collection. \nBut Belle has a secret\, one she must protect at all costs. She was born not Belle da Costa Greene but Belle Marion Greener. She is the daughter of Richard Greener\, the first Black graduate of Harvard and a well-known advocate for equality. Belle’s complexion isn’t dark because of her alleged Portuguese heritage that lets her pass as white–her complexion is dark because she is African American. \nThe Personal Librarian tells the story of an extraordinary woman\, famous for her intellect\, style\, and wit\, and shares the lengths she must go to–for the protection of her family and her legacy–to preserve her carefully crafted white identity in the racist world in which she lives. \nABOUT THE AUTHORS\nMarie Benedict is a lawyer with more than ten years’ experience as a litigator. A graduate of Boston College and the Boston University School of Law\, she is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Only Woman in the Room\, The Mystery of Mrs. Christie\, Carnegie’s Maid\, The Other Einstein\, and Lady Clementine. All have been translated into multiple languages. She lives in Pittsburgh with her family. \nVictoria Christopher Murray is an acclaimed author with more than one million books in print. She has written more than twenty novels\, including Stand Your Ground\, an NAACP Image Award Winner for Outstanding Fiction and a Library Journal Best Book of the Year. She holds an MBA from the NYU Stern School of Business. \n
