SUMMARY:Book Club: The Order of Things by Sarah Gormley
DESCRIPTION:New book alert! The Order of Things will be released on September 10…you can pre-order your book on Amazon here. \nJoin us for Book Club at Yellow Studio on Tuesday October 1 at 6:30pm. There will be lively discussion\, questions posed and answered and time to connect with fellow YS Members. This is a zero pressure book club – didn’t quite finish the book? Come anyway. \nHosted by Fran Hauser & Emily Winograd Leonard (and we will have a very special guest via Zoom…the author herself\, Sarah Gormley!) \nLight refreshments will be available. \nAbout the book: \nWhat happens when a marketing executive leaves San Francisco to care for her dying mother on their family farm in Ohio? A Hallmark heroine would fall in love with her high school sweetheart during a snowstorm-but this is no Hallmark movie. Sarah Gormley spent most of her life trying to outrun the persistent self-loathing that plagued her from childhood\, convinced that self-worth was something she had to earn by doing rather than being. When she returned to Salt Creek Farm at age forty-five\, Gormley had no idea that detaching from the success she believed defined her\, untangling the complicated relationship with her mother\, and continuing the hard work of therapy would lead to a wildly transformed life. Told with exceptional candor and humor\, The Order of Things is a story about how one woman learned to let go of the patterns of her past to create a future she never imagined. Ultimately\, Gormley’s book is about hope\, with a powerful message that will inspire you to think about the possibility of change in your own life. \nAbout Sarah Gormley: \nSarah Gormley owns a contemporary art gallery\, Sarah Gormley Gallery (SGG)\, in Columbus\, Ohio that operates from the belief that original art can be a source of joy for everyone. She opened the gallery in 2019\, 25 years after her grandmother gifted Sarah with her first piece of art when she graduated from DePauw University. Sarah’s undergraduate degree reinforced an early love for literature and writing\, with a heavy sprinkling of the liberal arts fairy dust that teaches you how to think\, analyze and articulate a clear point of view. \nThat foundation was rounded out by concentrations in marketing and operations at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. Her marketing career included both agency work and in-house roles with global brands including IMAX\, Martha Stewart\, Girl Scouts of the USA and Adobe. Sarah was honored as one of 2015’s Forty Women to Watch Over 40\, a list that celebrates women who are upending the perception that 40 is past your prime. She has also been featured in Forbes and The CMO Club. \nIn June of 2019\, Gormley was selected to speak at her 25th class reunion at DePauw University. After she spoke\, a woman Sarah had never met approached her and said\, “You should write a book.” Turns out that woman was celebrated author Meg Kissinger\, a fact Sarah learned only after she asked Meg if she might consider offering a praise quote for The Order of Things – because life is just funny that way.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Thresholds
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday October 19 from 4 to 6pm to see Thresholds and celebrate the featured Artists\, Kate Rusek and Monica Shulman. \nThe Gallery at Yellow Studio is pleased to present Thresholds\, a thought-provoking exhibition featuring sculptural works by Kate Rusek and paintings by Monica Shulman. This show delves into the fascinating realm of liminal spaces\, exploring the transformative power of art and the beauty found in moments of transition. The exhibition runs from October 19 to November 15. \nIn Thresholds\, Rusek and Shulman guide viewers through the intriguing spaces between defined states\, where change and growth occur. Rusek’s ceramic forms capture absence as a tangible object to touch and feel. Shulman’s layered paintings capture the essence of liminal experiences\, visual diaries that mark the artist’s journey through life’s transitions. Both artists embrace the creative potential in uncertain\, in-between spaces: Rusek’s work embodies the threshold between material histories and imagined futures\, while Shulman’s canvases capture fleeting moments between the past and the future. \nPlease RSVP. All are welcome. \nMore images here. \n An Open Cavity 4 by Kate Rusek \n In a Manner of Speaking by Monica Shulman

SUMMARY:Nature & Sustainability Club x Our Swap Shoppe: Swap 'Til You Drop
DESCRIPTION:The Yellow Studio Nature & Sustainability Club will co-host a women’s clothing swap on Thursday\, October 24 with local mom and sustainability advocate Kayla Kaplowitz\, founder of Our Swap Shoppe. Celebrate the International Day of Climate Action by swapping your pre-loved clothes and accessories for something “new.” \nThe average American buys 64 items of clothing and 7 pairs of shoes per year — 5x more than in 1980. Swapping your clothes helps to reduce textile waste\, encourages you to downsize your wardrobe responsibly\, and ensures your pre-loved items will find a good home. \nParticipants are asked to bring up to 10 pre-loved but good-condition Fall clothing and/or accessories and a tote bag. Dresses and blouses should be on hangers. This is not a 1:1 swap; it’s first-come first-served! Unwanted items will be donated to Dress for Success and The Community Center of Northern Westchester. \nLight bites and wine will be served\, and there will be plenty of clothing racks and tables to display each item. \nDue to space constraints\, this event is limited to 40 women. \nNot a YS Member and curious about joining? Learn more and join here. \nArtist\, Social and All Access YS Member (20% discount): $20\nCommunity YS Member (10% discount): $22.50\nNon YS Member: $25
