Carve, Print, Repeat: Beginner Relief Printing Workshop with Allison Belolan during UPAW

July 21 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

$48.00 – $60.00

In this beginner-friendly workshop, on Sunday July 21 as part of Upstate Art Weekend, artist and printmaker Allison Belolan will introduce you to the expressive potential of relief printmaking using Soft-Kut blocks and safe-wash ink.

No prior experience is necessary—just bring a curious mind and willingness to experiment! Relief printmaking is one of the oldest printmaking techniques, dating back to 8th-century China. This accessible method is popular for its simplicity, versatility, and ability to produce multiple copies of bold, detailed images.

Under Allison’s skilled instruction, you’ll learn the fundamental relief printing techniques, from transferring your designs to the block to inking and hand-printing on paper. You’ll also explore the versatility of water-based inks and the satisfying process of carving and editioning your own prints.

At the end of the workshop, you’ll take home your carved Soft-Kut block and the tools to continue printing at home, so you can keep “carving, printing, and repeating” long after the session is over.

This paid workshop is open to anyone 18+ interested in learning about relief printmaking and is limited to 12 participants.

Come to the workshop with a 4×6 black and white sketch or drawing of your image.

Your image should be on the simple side with no small details and no lettering.
