Film Club: Discussion of Sweetie

Join us for the next Film Club meeting on Wednesday, August 19 at 7pm. We will be discussing the selected film, Sweetie (1989). See the trailer here.
Sweetie is a 1989 Australian black comedy drama film directed by Jane Campion, and starring Genevieve Lemon, Karen Colston, Tom Lycos, and Jon Darling. Co-written by Campion and Gerard Lee, the film documents the contentious and chaotic relationships among a woman in her twenties, her parents, and her emotionally unstable sister.
Film premise: Jane Campion’s stunning debut feature, Sweetie, focuses on the hazardous relationship between the buttoned-down, superstitious Kay and her rampaging, devil-may-care sister, “Sweetie” and, by extension, their entire family’s rotten roots.
Where to watch: You can stream on HBO Max, Hulu, The Criterion Channel, or rent/buy it on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV Store.
Hosted by Beth Spitalny
This session’s conversation will be led by Beth on topics from the film such as theme, style, genre and more!
The Yellow Studio Film Club is a group of women who are interested in watching and discussing female-centric stories that have been on the big screen. Each month, a different film will be chosen – selections will vary in terms of genre and time period but will always involve a female-centric theme and/or be written and/or directed by a woman. Once a month the group will meet to discuss the various aspects of the chosen film. Meetings will be informal and open to any YS Member who has a passion, interest and/or curiosity about movies.
